WooCommerce SEO: check what your SEO plugin cannot see

WooCommerce SEO is the work that gets a WordPress store’s products and categories found on Google and recommended in AI answers. An SEO plugin edits tags; Digimetrics checks the live result: Full Site Audit (1 to 3.5 minutes) scores the store out of 100 with fixes tagged SEO, speed or GEO, On-Page Optimisation rewrites a product page against the top three results, and AI Mentions Tracker shows whether AI assistants name you.

The short answer

  • WooCommerce is good for SEO because you control everything WordPress controls: URLs, templates, hosting and plugins. That control also means more can go wrong.
  • An SEO plugin handles titles, descriptions and sitemaps; it cannot tell you how fast the live store is or whether AI tools can read it.
  • Full Site Audit checks the whole store in one run and returns a prioritised fix list, including AI-readiness fixes such as llms.txt.
  • Changing permalink settings changes existing product URLs, which return 404 errors unless you set up redirects.
  • Every tool is free for 7 days with no card, enough for a full audit, a product page rewrite and an AI check.

Is WooCommerce good for SEO?

Yes. WooCommerce runs on WordPress, so you control URLs, templates, content and hosting completely. The trade-off is that speed, plugin conflicts and duplicate pages are your responsibility, not the platform’s.

That control is why many stores choose WooCommerce over hosted platforms. You can set your own permalink structure, edit any template and install any SEO plugin. But nobody stops you from installing thirty plugins on cheap hosting either.

The issues we see most on WooCommerce stores are predictable: slow product pages from heavy themes and page builders, tag and attribute archive pages that duplicate category pages, products with manufacturer descriptions copied word for word, and old URLs left broken after a permalink change. Full Site Audit finds these in one run and tells you which to fix first.

What is the best WooCommerce SEO plugin, and what does it miss?

Any of the well-known WordPress SEO plugins will handle titles, meta descriptions, sitemaps and basic schema. What none of them do is check the live store from outside, measure speed or track whether AI assistants recommend you.

Think of the plugin as the editor and Digimetrics as the inspector. The table shows who does what.

How to improve WooCommerce SEO: the checklist

Fix speed and broken URLs first, then duplicate archive pages, then product and category copy, then structured data. Measure after each step.

Work through it in order:

  • Speed. Test your heaviest product page with Page Speed Check. Image formats and unused plugin scripts are the usual culprits.
  • Permalinks and redirects. WooCommerce’s own documentation warns that changing permalink settings breaks existing product URLs unless you add redirects. Crawl the store with Technical SEO Crawler to find them.
  • Archive pages. Decide which tag and attribute archives deserve to be indexed. Thin archives that repeat your categories are better set to noindex in your plugin.
  • Category pages. Add a short, useful intro above the product grid, written for the keyword you checked in Keyword Analysis.
  • Product pages. Replace copied manufacturer text with your own description, and use On-Page Optimisation to see what the top results include that you do not.
  • Structured data. Confirm product schema shows price and availability. Full Site Audit flags missing structured data.

Keep category and product permalink bases different. WooCommerce notes that WordPress needs them to be unique to tell categories from products.

How much should WooCommerce stores spend on SEO?

Spend first on fast hosting and your own product copy, then on a checker to measure progress. Paid help makes sense once you know what needs fixing.

Digimetrics Starter is $31 a month billed annually with 3 projects and 25 tracked keywords. Stores with large catalogues or several sites usually choose Pro at $87 a month for 250 tracked keywords.

If a developer or agency handles WooCommerce SEO services, run Full Site Audit before and after their work so you can see the score move. More advice for online stores is on our ecommerce page.

Frequently asked questions

Still unsure? Email support@digimetrics.ai and a person will reply.

What is the best SEO tool for WooCommerce stores?

Pair a WordPress SEO plugin for editing with an outside checker for the live result. Digimetrics audits the whole store, rewrites weak product pages and tracks AI recommendations, free for 7 days with no card.

Is there a free WooCommerce SEO plugin?

Yes, the major WordPress SEO plugins all have free versions that cover titles, descriptions and sitemaps. Digimetrics complements them, and you can try every tool free for 7 days.

What is the best SEO WooCommerce theme?

A lightweight theme that loads fast with your real products and plugins. Test a theme demo’s product page with Page Speed Check before committing, and again after setup.

How do I write a WooCommerce SEO title?

Lead with the product name and its main keyword, add a distinguishing feature, and keep it short enough not to be cut off. Your SEO plugin lets you set it per product.

Should I noindex WooCommerce tag pages?

If tag pages only repeat products already grouped in categories, noindexing them usually reduces duplicate, thin pages. Keep any tag page that targets a real search and has unique content.

How long does WooCommerce SEO take?

Technical fixes can show up within weeks of Google recrawling. New category pages in a competitive niche often take months. Time to Rank gives a forecast range per keyword.
