BACKLINK CHECKER
Who links to your site, and are those links worth anything?
A backlink checker lists the websites that link to a domain and how strong those links are. Digimetrics Backlinks Explorer shows total backlinks, referring domains, dofollow share and a domain rank from 0 to 1,000 for every linking site, for your domain or a competitor's. One lookup returns in 10 to 45 seconds.

How do I check backlinks in Google, and why use a backlink checker as well?
Google Search Console has a free Links report that shows a sample of the sites linking to you. It only covers your own verified site and does not say which links are nofollow, so you need a backlink checker for competitors and link quality.
Search Console is worth opening: it lists your top linking sites and your most linked pages. But Google's own help page says the report is a sample, not a complete list, its tables stop at 1,000 rows, and it does not mark links as nofollow. You also cannot look up anyone else's site with it.
Backlinks Explorer fills those gaps by doing what Search Console cannot: check backlinks of any website, yours or a rival's, with every linking site scored and every link typed as dofollow or nofollow. Use both. Connect Search Console for your own clicks and searches (free and read-only), and run Backlinks Explorer when you need the full link picture.
| Search Console Links report | Backlinks Explorer | |
|---|---|---|
| Whose site | Your verified site only | Any domain or single page |
| Coverage | A sample of links | Every link counted |
| Dofollow or nofollow | Not shown | Shown per link, plus dofollow share |
| Strength of each linking site | Not scored | Domain rank 0 to 1,000 |
| Cost | Free | Included in every plan |
How do I know if my backlinks are good or toxic?
A good backlink comes from a real, relevant site with decent strength and usually passes ranking strength (dofollow). A risky one comes from a weak, unrelated site, often in bulk or with the same keyword-stuffed anchor text.
Backlinks Explorer gives you the three signals that separate the two. Domain rank tells you how strong each linking site is. Link count per site shows when one domain sends an unnatural number of links. Type shows whether a link is dofollow or nofollow. In the official tutorial's sample (fictional brand Brightpath), the strongest backer was a review site with domain rank 612 and 51 links: exactly the kind of source you want more of.
Anchor text is the fourth signal. If dozens of links use the exact same commercial phrase, that pattern looks manufactured. Check the links on your own pages with the anchor text checker, which flags generic, broken and over-optimised anchors. New to the terms? Our glossary explains dofollow links and anchor text in a sentence each.
- Keep: relevant sites, healthy domain rank, a few natural links each
- Watch: low-rank sites sending many links, unrelated topics
- Investigate: identical keyword-rich anchors across many sites
What is a good backlink checker that is cheaper than Ahrefs?
If you need a few lookups a month rather than a full link database, a toolkit plan with a backlink checker costs far less. Digimetrics Starter is $31 a month billed annually, and you can try Backlinks Explorer free for 7 days.
Starter includes Backlinks Explorer alongside the rest of the toolkit, with 3 projects and 25 tracked keywords.
What you give up is history and scale: specialist link tools are built for people who live in link data every day. What you get is the answer a small business or freelancer usually needs, who links to me, who links to my rival and which links matter, next to the tools that act on it. Our Ahrefs alternative page compares the two in detail.
How can I see my competitor's backlinks and turn them into outreach?
Enter the competitor's domain in Backlinks Explorer. Sort the result by domain rank, and the strong, relevant sites that link to them but not to you become your outreach list.
Start with Competitors Identifier if you are not sure who your search rivals are. Then run Backlinks Explorer on the one sitting directly above you. Review sites, industry directories, local associations and roundup articles are the usual wins, because they link to several businesses in the same category and are open to adding one more.

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK
Frequently asked questions

What is a backlink checker?
A backlink checker lists the websites that link to a site, how strong each linking site is, and whether each link passes ranking strength (dofollow) or not (nofollow). Backlinks Explorer adds a domain rank from 0 to 1,000 for every linking site.
Is there a free backlink checker?
Google Search Console's Links report is free for your own site, but it shows a sample and does not mark nofollow links. Backlinks Explorer is free to start: new accounts get every tool for 7 days with no card.
How do I see who links to my website?
Choose whole site (including subdomains) or one page, enter your domain, and read the profile: totals at the top, then every linking site with its domain rank, number of links and link type. Results take 10 to 45 seconds.
Can I check a competitor's backlinks?
Yes. Enter any domain, or a single page, to see every site that links to it and how strong each one is.
What are dofollow backlinks?
Dofollow backlinks are ordinary links that pass ranking strength to the page they point at. Nofollow links tell search engines not to pass it. Backlinks Explorer shows the type of every link and the dofollow share of the whole profile; the sample site in the official tutorial was 81% dofollow.
What does domain rank mean?
It scores each linking site from 0 to 1,000. The higher the number, the stronger that site's links tend to be, so it tells you which links matter most and which sites are worth asking for one.
What should I do with the results?
Compare yourself with rivals using Competitors Identifier, build an outreach list from the strong sites that link to them, and use the anchor text checker to clean up the links on your own pages.
