What is llms.txt, and do I need one?
llms.txt is a proposed standard: a Markdown file at /llms.txt that gives AI tools a short summary of your site and links to the pages that matter. You do not need one to rank on Google, but it is a cheap, useful signpost for AI services and agents that read it.
The proposal, published at llmstxt.org by Jeremy Howard in September 2024, exists because web pages are built for people. Navigation, ads and scripts make them hard for AI tools to read, and most sites are too large to fit in an AI model's working memory. An llms.txt file solves that with a curated shortlist.
Be clear about what it does not do. Google's guidance says Google Search ignores llms.txt and that having one will neither help nor harm your rankings or visibility in Google's AI features. So the honest answer to "do I need one?" is: you need a readable site first; llms.txt is a low-cost extra for the other AI services and agents that use it. The spec has been adopted widely: the proposal lists Lighthouse checks for it, and OpenAI, Anthropic and Google publish llms.txt files for their own developer docs.
llms.txt vs llms-full.txt: what is the difference?
llms.txt is the short index: a summary and a list of key pages. llms-full.txt is the detailed version, with fuller content in one file, for tools that want more than a list of links.
Think of llms.txt as the table of contents and llms-full.txt as the book. The generator writes both in one run, so you do not have to choose.

How do I create an llms.txt file for my website?
Write a Markdown file with your site name as a heading, a one-line summary in a blockquote and lists of links to key pages, then upload it to your site root. Or let the generator write it from your site.
The format is simple. The spec at llmstxt.org says an H1 with the site name is the only required section, followed by an optional blockquote summary, optional notes, and sections headed with H2s that list links as `[name](url): description`. The hard part is not the syntax; it is choosing which pages to list and describing each one plainly.
That is where the generator saves time. In the official tutorial's sample (fictional brand Brightpath), it found no llms.txt yet, confirmed AI bots were allowed, and listed four key pages with plain descriptions, ready to download.

Does llms.txt help me show up in ChatGPT?
Nobody can promise that. There is no public confirmation that ChatGPT uses llms.txt to choose which brands to recommend; it is a signpost for AI tools and agents that look for it, not a ranking switch.
