What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of writing and structuring pages so answer engines can lift a direct answer from them. Those engines include Google's featured snippets and AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and voice assistants. In practice it means a question-led heading, a short self-contained answer underneath, then specifics, tables and FAQs that back it up.

The short answer
- An answer engine replies with an answer, not a list of links. Perplexity describes itself as exactly that: a tool that searches the web and synthesizes a direct answer with citations.
- AEO is about the shape of your content: the question, the first two sentences under it, and the evidence that follows.
- You cannot tag a page to become the answer. Google says plainly that you cannot mark a page as a featured snippet; its systems choose.
- AEO and GEO overlap. AEO is the formatting discipline; GEO is the wider job of being retrieved, trusted and cited by generative AI.
- Measure it by asking the engines your buyers' questions and checking whether your page is quoted, not by rank alone.
How answer engine optimization works
Answer engines retrieve a few pages for a question and extract or summarize the passage that answers it best. AEO makes your passage the easiest one to extract: clear, short, specific and placed where the engine looks first.
Think of the engine as a hurried researcher. It runs a search, opens several pages, and scans for a sentence that answers the question without needing the rest of the page for context. Google describes its AI features as grounding answers in pages retrieved from the Search index and fanning one question out into several related searches. Perplexity says each answer includes numbered citations linking to the original sources.
So AEO works on two layers. The page layer: is your page among the sources retrieved? That is ordinary SEO, covered in our AI SEO checklist. The passage layer: once retrieved, does your page contain the best extractable answer? That second layer is what AEO adds.
Answer engine optimization examples: before and after
The fastest way to understand AEO is to see the same content written two ways. The “after” version answers first, uses numbers, and stands alone if quoted.
These rewrites follow the pattern AI Page Rewrite produces. In the official tutorial's sample (fictional brand Brightpath), the tool replaced the vague phrase “powerful features” with the specifics behind it: timelines, boards, workflows and 200+ integrations. That is AEO in one line: an engine cannot quote “powerful”, but it can quote a list.
The first row below uses that tutorial result; the other rows are illustrative rewrites for the same fictional brand, showing the pattern rather than real product claims.
| Question | Before (hard to quote) | After (answer-first) |
|---|---|---|
| What does the tool do? | We offer powerful features for modern teams. | Brightpath plans team work with timelines, boards and workflows, and connects to 200+ other apps. |
| How much does it cost? | Flexible plans to suit every budget. | Plans start at a fixed monthly price per seat, with a free tier; the pricing table lists every limit. |
| How long does setup take? | Getting started is easy. | Most teams import their projects in one sitting; the setup checklist has five steps. |
| Is it right for small teams? | Built for teams of all sizes. | It suits teams that have outgrown spreadsheets; the free tier covers small teams with basic needs. |
Rule of thumb: if a sentence would still be true about your competitor, it is not an answer. Replace it with something only you can say.
Answer engine optimization best practices
Lead with the answer, keep it self-contained, prefer specifics to adjectives, use tables and lists for anything comparable, and keep every structured data claim in line with the visible page.
Most AEO best practices are writing habits, not technical tricks. Google's guidance on AI features adds two technical points worth keeping: make sure important content is available as text (not only inside images or scripts), and make sure your structured data matches the visible text on the page.
- One question per heading. Engines map questions to sections, so do not answer three questions under one heading.
- Answer in 40 to 60 words. Long enough to be complete, short enough to quote whole.
- Name the subject in the answer. “It costs $20” is useless out of context; “Brightpath Pro costs $20 a seat” is quotable.
- Use tables for comparisons. A row like “Plan, price, limit” can be lifted straight into an answer.
- Add an FAQ block for the exact buying questions, and mark it up with the Schema Generator if the FAQ is visible on the page.
- Show where facts come from. The GEO research paper found that citing sources was one of the most effective edits for AI visibility.
- Keep it current. Dated facts get dropped. Put a last-updated date on pages where freshness matters.
AEO vs SEO: is answer engine optimization replacing SEO?
No. AEO sits on top of SEO. A page that is not crawled and indexed cannot be quoted, and Google says optimizing for its AI features is still SEO.
Google's generative AI guide addresses the acronyms head on: AEO and GEO describe work focused on AI search visibility, but from Google's perspective it is optimizing for search and therefore still SEO. Its AI features page adds that there are no additional technical requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet.
What AEO changes is emphasis. Classic SEO can win a click with a strong title and a long page. AEO wins the quote with the first two sentences under the right heading. You want both. For a side-by-side of all three acronyms, see SEO vs GEO vs AEO, and for the wider AI discipline read what generative engine optimization is.
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page and earn the click | Be the quoted answer |
| Unit of work | The page | The question and its first answer |
| Typical output | Blue link, title and snippet | Featured snippet, AI Overview citation, chatbot answer, voice reply |
| Key signals you control | Crawlability, relevance, links, speed | Answer-first structure, specifics, tables, FAQs, cited sources |
| How you measure | Rank, impressions, clicks | Whether engines quote or cite you for target questions |
When did answer engine optimization start?
AEO grew out of featured snippets and voice assistants, which answered questions directly from web pages, and became a mainstream practice once AI chat and AI search began writing full answers with citations.
The idea is older than ChatGPT. Featured snippets reversed the normal result format by showing the answer text first, and voice assistants read a single answer aloud, so writers learned to put a crisp answer under a question heading. What changed with generative AI is scale: instead of one snippet per query, engines like Perplexity, ChatGPT search and Google AI Mode write an answer for almost any question and cite several sources.
One lesson carried over unchanged. Google has always said you cannot mark a page as a featured snippet; its systems decide. The same is true of AI answers. AEO improves the odds, it does not hand you the result.
What tools help with answer engine optimization?
The useful AEO tools do three things: rewrite a page into answer-first form, check that engines can access it, and show whether the engines actually quote you.
When you compare answer engine optimization tools or services, look for ones that show the actual AI answers and cited sources, not just a score. Inside Digimetrics, the AEO loop uses four tools:
- AI Page Rewrite: one-sentence answer, comparison table, specifics and an FAQ block for up to 3 questions.
- Schema Generator: FAQ, Product, Organization and 13 other types as JSON-LD.
- AI Readiness Check: llms.txt, AI bot access and structured data checked.
- AI Mentions Tracker: mention rate, citation rate and sources across GPT-4o, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overview.
All four are included in the 7-day free trial (no card).
HOW IT WORKS
How to do answer engine optimization in five steps
- 1
Collect the real questions
Pull them from Google's People Also Ask, your sales calls and support inbox, and the prompts buyers type into AI. Three to ten per page is plenty.
- 2
Put each question in a heading
Phrase it the way people ask it: “How much does X cost?” not “Pricing overview”.
- 3
Answer in the first one or two sentences
Write a 40 to 60 word answer that makes sense on its own if it were the only thing quoted. Name the thing, the number, the condition.
- 4
Back it with quotable evidence
Follow with specifics, a comparison table and an FAQ. AI Page Rewrite drafts the answer sentence, table, specifics and FAQ for any URL in up to 2.5 minutes.
- 5
Check the answer is reachable, then test it
Run the AI Readiness Check so AI bots can read the page, then ask the same questions in the AI Mentions Tracker to see if engines quote you.

What is AEO in SEO?
AEO (answer engine optimization) is the part of SEO focused on getting your content quoted as the direct answer in featured snippets, AI Overviews, AI chatbots and voice assistants. It works by structuring pages as clear questions followed by short, specific, self-contained answers.
What is an answer engine?
An answer engine replies to a question with a written answer instead of a list of links. Perplexity defines itself this way: it searches the web, identifies sources and synthesizes a response with citations. ChatGPT search and Google AI Overviews behave similarly.
How is AEO different from GEO?
AEO focuses on the answer format: question headings, answer-first paragraphs, tables and FAQs. GEO is the broader effort to be retrieved, trusted and cited by generative AI, including crawler access and brand mentions across the web. The same page work serves both.
Do I need FAQ schema for AEO?
It helps machines read your FAQs, but it is not required. Google says there is no special schema needed for its AI features and that structured data must match the visible text. Write the visible FAQ well first, then add markup.
How do I measure answer engine optimization?
Ask the engines the questions you optimized for and record whether they quote or cite your page. The AI Mentions Tracker does this across five engines and reports mention rate, citation rate, position and the sources cited.
Can AEO guarantee my page becomes the answer?
No. No tool can guarantee AI citations or featured snippets, and neither can any agency. Google says you cannot mark a page as a featured snippet. AEO makes your page easier to choose; the engine still decides.
