What is domain authority, and does Google use it?

Domain authority is a score created by SEO tool companies to estimate how likely a site is to rank. Google does not use third-party authority scores; Moz, which created Domain Authority, describes it as a comparative metric and not a direct ranking factor.

Each tool has its own version. Moz's Domain Authority runs from 1 to 100. Ahrefs' Domain Rating runs from 0 to 100 on a logarithmic scale and is purely link-based. Digimetrics reports an authority score for the domain. The scales differ, so compare sites inside one tool rather than mixing numbers from different ones.

The score is still useful as a quick comparison. If a competitor's authority is far above yours, you know why they win hard keywords, and you can aim for easier ones while you build links. Our glossary entry on domain authority explains the idea in a sentence.

How to check domain authority of a website (and read the result)

Enter the domain, read the authority score, then check the links and keywords behind it. A score without its causes does not tell you what to do next.

Here is how each output turns into a decision.

OutputWhat it tells youWhat to do with it
Authority scoreHow strong the domain is overallCompare against the sites ranking above you
Backlinks and referring domainsHow many links, from how many sitesMore referring domains usually matter more than raw link count
Organic keywordsHow many searches the site shows up forA gap here means content gaps
Monthly trafficEstimated organic visitsSanity-check a competitor's real reach
SSLWhether the certificate is validFix straight away if invalid

Website traffic and authority: why the two belong together

Authority shows potential; traffic and keywords show whether a site is using it. Looking at both stops you from over-rating a site with links but little content, or under-rating a focused niche site.

That is why this check reports authority, organic keywords and estimated traffic side by side. In the official tutorial's sample (fictional brand Brightpath), 186 keywords sat on page two (positions 11 to 20), where the quickest gains are. Those keywords already have Google's attention; a better page often moves them.

To act on that list, check exact positions with Rank Checker and improve the page with On-Page Optimisation. For month-by-month traffic history, use Search Trends.

How do I increase my domain authority?

Earn links from relevant, trusted sites and publish pages worth linking to. There is no shortcut; buying links breaks Google's spam policies.

Start by studying who links to the sites above you. The Backlink Checker lists every referring domain for any site, with a domain rank from 0 to 1,000 for each linking site and whether the link is dofollow. The sites that link to several competitors but not to you are your best outreach list. Our guide on how to check your backlinks walks through the process.

As Ahrefs itself notes, Google ranks pages, not websites, so a strong page on a modest domain can still win a well-chosen keyword.

Domain authority checker vs Moz, Ahrefs and Semrush

Each suite has its own authority metric inside a subscription. Page Technical & Domain Analysis gives you an authority score with backlinks, keywords and traffic in one check.

If you already use Moz or Ahrefs daily, keep their scores for consistency. If you need a website authority checker for occasional lookups on your own site and a few rivals, paying per check is simpler. See our Moz Pro alternative comparison for details.

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK

Frequently asked questions

Still unsure? Email support@digimetrics.ai and a person will reply.

What is the best domain authority checker in 2026?

One that shows the score and the reasons behind it: links, keywords and traffic. Page Technical & Domain Analysis returns all of these for any domain or page, in under 1.5 minutes.

Is there a free domain authority checker?

Your first checks are free during the 7-day trial every new Digimetrics account gets, no card needed. That covers your site and several competitors.

Is a domain rating checker the same thing?

Similar idea, different metric. Domain Rating is Ahrefs' link-based score from 0 to 100; Domain Authority is Moz's from 1 to 100. Digimetrics shows its own authority score alongside the backlinks behind it.

What is a good domain authority score?

There is no universal good number, because scales differ between tools. What matters is how you compare with the sites ranking for your target keywords.

Why did my authority score drop when I did nothing wrong?

Authority scores are relative, so they can move when other sites gain links or when sites that link to you lose strength. Look at the referring domains count first: if it is steady, a small score change is rarely worth worrying about. Focus on the keywords and traffic, which reflect real results.

Can I check a single page instead of the whole domain?

Yes. Enter a page URL instead of a domain to see the numbers for that page, which is useful when one competitor page outranks you on a domain that is otherwise weaker than yours.

Can I schedule regular checks?

Yes. Add an optional schedule and the analysis re-runs on its own, so you can see whether your authority, keywords and traffic move over time.
