The short answer
- A page speed test measures how quickly a page shows its content, how stable it is while loading and how fast it responds.
- Page Speed Check gives Google's 0-100 performance score plus the three Core Web Vitals for any URL.
- Fixes come back in order of how much time each one costs you, so the first fix is the biggest win.
- Each test takes 10 seconds to a minute; the 7-day free trial covers as many re-tests as you need.
- Test your slowest important page first, usually the home page or a heavy product or landing page.
WHAT YOU GET BACK
What the speed test shows
- Performance scoreGoogle’s 0-100 score
- Largest Contentful PaintHow long the main content takes to show
- Layout shiftHow much the page jumps while loading
- InteractionHow quickly it responds to a tap
- FixesOrdered by how much time each one costs you
From the official tutorialA score of 68; the top fix, modern image formats, saves about 420 KB. (Sample brand “Brightpath”.)
HOW IT WORKS
How to test page speed in three steps
- 1
Paste any page URL
That is the only input. Test the page that matters most to sales, not just the home page.
- 2
Read the score and the vitals
Google's 0-100 performance score, then Largest Contentful Paint, layout shift and interaction, each in plain words.
- 3
Fix from the top of the list
Fixes are ordered by how much time each one costs you. Make the first change, then re-test to confirm.
Takes 10 seconds to a minute. Included on every plan.
What is website speed, and how is it measured?
Website speed is how quickly a page becomes useful to a visitor. Google measures it with three Core Web Vitals: Largest Contentful Paint (loading), Interaction to Next Paint (responsiveness) and Cumulative Layout Shift (visual stability).
A single “load time” hides what visitors feel. A page can finish loading late but show its main content early, or load fast and then jump around as ads and images arrive. That is why Google splits speed into three measures, each with a published target for a good experience.
| Core Web Vital | What it measures | Google's “good” threshold |
|---|---|---|
| Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) | How long the main content takes to show | Within 2.5 seconds |
| Interaction to Next Paint (INP) | How quickly the page responds to a tap or click | 200 milliseconds or less |
| Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) | How much the page jumps while loading | 0.1 or less |

How to improve website speed: start with the biggest fix
Fix in order of time saved. Most slow pages have one or two heavy problems, often oversized images, that account for most of the delay.
Page Speed Check orders its fixes by how much time each one costs you, so you do not waste a developer's day on a tiny gain. In the official tutorial's sample (fictional brand Brightpath), the page scored 68, and the top fix, serving images in modern formats, would save about 420 KB.
Common fixes the list surfaces, in the order they usually matter:
- Compress images and serve modern formats.
- Delay scripts that are not needed for the first view.
- Reserve space for images, ads and embeds so the layout does not jump.
- Cut unused code from themes and plugins.
- Re-test after each change to see the score move.
Does page speed affect ranking?
Yes, as part of page experience. Google says good Core Web Vitals align with what its core ranking systems seek to reward, but relevant, helpful content still matters more.
Treat speed as a tie-breaker and a conversion lever rather than a magic switch. A fast page with thin content will not outrank a slower page that answers the question far better. But between two similar pages, the faster one has an edge, and visitors are less likely to leave before they see your offer.
If your page is fast and still not ranking, compare it with the pages above it using On-Page Optimisation, or read why your website is not ranking.
Looking for a PageSpeed Insights alternative?
PageSpeed Insights is Google's free speed tool and the source of the 0-100 performance score. Page Speed Check reports Google's score and orders the fixes by time saved, inside the same platform as your SEO and AI checks.
Is PageSpeed Insights by Google? Yes, it is Google's own tool, and it is excellent for developers. Page Speed Check is built for people who want the answer in plain words and the next step linked: a website speed test result next to your crawl, rankings and audit.
To test speed across the whole site rather than one page, run the Full Site Audit, which tags speed issues alongside SEO and AI-visibility fixes. Before a launch, the website launch checklist checks speed together with broken links, SSL and security headers.
Page Speed Check vs Semrush and Ahrefs for a small business
Big suites include speed inside site audits on a subscription. Page Speed Check is a one-page test, done in 10 seconds to a minute, that you can run whenever you change something.
For a small business, the useful loop is test, fix, re-test. Each test takes under a minute, so you can run that loop many times during the 7-day free trial. When a wider technical crawl is needed, the Technical SEO Crawler lists issues across many pages with severity.
Digimetrics makes digital marketing much easier to teach. Instead of just showing students scores and reports, I can explain what the issues mean, why they matter, and how to fix them in a practical way.

What is the best page speed test in 2026?
One that reports Google's own metrics and tells you which fix matters most. Page Speed Check gives the 0-100 performance score, the three Core Web Vitals and fixes ordered by time saved, in about a minute.
Is there a free website speed test?
Yes. Google's PageSpeed Insights is free, and your first Page Speed Check tests are free too: new Digimetrics accounts get every tool for 7 days, no card.
How do I check website speed on mobile?
Run the test on the page you care about; Google's performance score is the main measure, and mobile visitors are usually where slow pages hurt most. Test again after each fix.
What is a good page speed score?
Higher is better on Google's 0-100 scale. More useful than the score is meeting the Core Web Vitals targets: LCP within 2.5 seconds, INP of 200 milliseconds or less and CLS of 0.1 or less.
How do I increase website speed without a developer?
Start with images: compress them and use modern formats, which was the top fix in the tutorial sample. Remove plugins you do not use, then re-test to see what moved.
How long does a page speed test take?
Between 10 seconds and a minute per page.
Why is my score different each time I test?
Lab speed scores vary slightly from run to run because network and server response change. Look at the trend over a few tests rather than one number, and judge a fix by whether the Core Web Vitals move toward Google's targets.
