AI SEARCH GUIDE
What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of making your content easy for AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews to find, trust and cite. It builds on SEO, since pages must be crawlable and indexed first, then adds clear answers, specific facts and cited sources,, and tracks how often AI answers name your brand.

The short answer
- GEO is optimization for answers written by AI, where success means being named or cited inside the answer rather than ranking as a blue link.
- The term comes from a research paper by Aggarwal and colleagues (Princeton and others), accepted to KDD 2024, which found that adding citations, quotations and statistics lifted source visibility in AI answers by 30 to 40% on its benchmark.
- The same paper found classic keyword stuffing gave little to no improvement, so GEO rewards evidence and clarity, not repetition.
- Google says optimizing for its AI features is still SEO, so GEO sits on top of crawlability, indexing and helpful content; it does not replace them.
- No tool or agency can guarantee AI citations. What you can do is measure your mention rate, fix what blocks AI from reading you, and re-measure.
What is generative engine optimization (GEO) and how does it work?
GEO works by shaping the pages an AI system retrieves so that, when it writes an answer, your facts and your brand are the ones it uses and links to.
Most AI answer engines do not answer purely from memory. They run searches, pull a handful of pages, and write a summary with links. Google describes two parts of this for its own AI features: retrieval-augmented generation (grounding answers in pages from the Search index) and query fan-out (issuing several related searches across subtopics to gather more sources). ChatGPT search works in a similar spirit: OpenAI says it rewrites a question into one or more targeted queries and sends them to search providers.
That gives GEO two jobs. First, be retrievable: your page has to be crawlable, indexed and relevant to one of those fanned-out queries. Second, be usable: once retrieved, the page has to contain a clear, specific, well-supported passage the model can lift. A page that buries its answer under marketing copy may be retrieved and still never quoted.
If you are new to the terms, start with what a large language model is, then read how answer engine optimization focuses on the answer format itself.
Where the term GEO comes from: what the research actually found
GEO was named in a 2023 paper, “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” (arXiv 2311.09735), accepted to KDD 2024. It tested nine ways of editing a source page and measured how visible that source became in AI-generated answers.
The authors built a benchmark of varied queries, called GEO-bench, and measured visibility with two metrics: a position-adjusted word count (how much of the answer draws on your source, weighted by how early it appears) and a subjective impression score. Their headline finding was that GEO methods could boost visibility by up to 40%. The best methods improved on the baseline by 41% and 28% on those two metrics.
The detail is more useful than the headline. Here is what the paper reported for the methods most people ask about:
| Method tested in the paper | What it means | Reported effect |
|---|---|---|
| Cite Sources | Add citations from credible sources | Among the top methods: 30 to 40% relative gain on position-adjusted word count |
| Quotation Addition | Add relevant quotes from credible people | Among the top methods, strongest in people, society, explanation and history topics |
| Statistics Addition | Replace qualitative claims with numbers | Among the top methods, strong for law, government and opinion questions |
| Fluency Optimization and Easy-to-Understand | Improve flow and simplify language | Visibility boost of 15 to 30% |
| Keyword Stuffing | Repeat query keywords, classic old-school SEO | Little to no improvement |
One finding matters for smaller brands: lower-ranked pages gained most. Cite Sources raised visibility by 115.1% for sites ranked fifth in search results, while the top-ranked site's visibility fell by 30.3% on average.
Why generative engine optimization is important now
It matters because buyers increasingly ask an AI for a shortlist instead of scanning ten links, and an answer that names three competitors and not you is a lost sale you never see in your analytics.
Google itself says people are increasingly gravitating to generative AI experiences to find information, and that its AI features show a wider and more diverse set of links than a classic results page. That cuts both ways. A small brand can appear next to the category leaders in one answer. It can also vanish if its pages are hard to read or blocked from the crawlers that feed these answers.
The harder part is that most of this is invisible by default. Traditional rank tracking tells you where you sit on Google page one; it says nothing about whether Perplexity recommended you this morning. That is why GEO starts with measurement, and why we wrote a separate guide on how to measure AI visibility.
In the official tutorial's sample run (fictional brand Brightpath), the AI Mentions Tracker found the brand named in 12 of 15 answers (80%), but one question averaged only 38% visibility. That single weak question is the GEO to-do list: a gap you can name, fix and re-test.
GEO vs SEO: what changes and what stays the same
SEO earns a ranked link; GEO earns a mention or citation inside an AI answer. Most of the groundwork is shared, and Google says optimizing for its AI features is still SEO.
Google's guide to generative AI search addresses the terms directly: AEO and GEO describe work focused on AI search visibility, but “from Google Search's perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.” It also lists tactics you can ignore for Google, including llms.txt files, chunking content into tiny pieces and seeking inauthentic mentions.
Outside Google the picture is less settled. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude run their own crawlers with their own rules, which is why the access step in GEO covers more than Googlebot. We compare all three disciplines side by side in SEO vs GEO vs AEO.
- Same: crawlable pages, fast loading, clear structure, original and helpful content, accurate structured data.
- Different: the unit of success (a mention, not a position), the way you measure it (asking AI engines, not checking a rank), and the crawlers you must allow.
- Emphasized more: a direct answer near the top, specific numbers in place of adjectives, and sources cited on the page.
What tools help with generative engine optimization?
You need three kinds of GEO tools: one that measures AI mentions, one that checks whether AI crawlers can read your site, and one that helps rewrite pages into quotable answers.
Generative engine optimization software is a young category, and many products do only the first job. When you compare GEO tools, platforms or companies, ask which of the three jobs they cover and whether they show you the actual answers and sources rather than a single score.
Digimetrics covers all three inside one account, with the free tier enough to run the measuring and checking tools:
| GEO job | Digimetrics tool | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Measure mentions, sentiment, citations and sources | AI Mentions Tracker | 2 to 5 minutes for up to 3 questions |
| Check llms.txt, AI bot access and structured data | AI Readiness Check | Up to a minute |
| Create llms.txt and llms-full.txt | llms.txt Generator | About a minute for both files |
| Rewrite a page with an answer, table and FAQ | AI Page Rewrite | Up to 2.5 minutes |
| Generate JSON-LD structured data | Schema Generator | A few seconds |
| Audit SEO, speed and GEO issues site-wide | Full Site Audit (SEO + AI) | 1 to 3.5 minutes |
Free to start: every tool unlocked for 7 days, no card. Run a full measure, check and rewrite cycle on one page.
Should you hire a generative engine optimization agency?
Hire a GEO agency only if it shows you a measured baseline, explains each change it will make, and refuses to promise placements. Anyone who guarantees AI citations is overselling.
Google's own guidance warns site owners to be wary of third-party tools and services that promise ranking success, and notes that no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems. OpenAI says the same of ChatGPT search in plainer words: placement is not guaranteed.
Good GEO services look like good SEO services: an audit, a prioritized fix list, content rewrites with evidence, and a re-measurement on a schedule. If you have the time, you can run that loop yourself with the six steps above. If you are an agency offering GEO, Digimetrics' Expert plan ($159 a month billed annually) adds white-label PDF export so the reports carry your brand; see how agencies use it.
How to learn generative engine optimization
Learn GEO by learning SEO fundamentals first, then running a weekly loop on your own site: ask AI engines your buyers' questions, change one page, and see whether the answers change.
Reading helps, but GEO is still an experimental discipline, so hands-on practice teaches faster than any course. A practical learning path:
- Read Google's Search Essentials and its guide to optimizing for generative AI search, so you know the official baseline.
- Read the GEO paper's results table to see which content edits moved visibility and which did not.
- Work through our AI SEO checklist on your own site.
- Run the AI Mentions Tracker on 3 buyer questions, rewrite one page, then re-run it after the page is recrawled.
- Keep a simple log: question, engines that named you, sources they cited, change made, result.
HOW IT WORKS
How to do generative engine optimization in six steps
- 1
Measure where you stand
Ask the AI engines the questions your buyers ask and record whether you are named. The AI Mentions Tracker does this across GPT-4o, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overview in 2 to 5 minutes.
- 2
Make sure AI can read your site
Check robots.txt, AI bot access, llms.txt and structured data with the AI Readiness Check (up to a minute).
- 3
Fix the SEO foundation
AI search features lean on search indexes. Run a Full Site Audit to catch crawl, speed and indexing problems; its fix list tags AI issues as GEO.
- 4
Rewrite your key pages to be quotable
Put a one-sentence answer at the top, swap vague claims for specifics, add a comparison table and an FAQ. AI Page Rewrite drafts all four in up to 2.5 minutes.
- 5
Describe your business for machines
Add Organization, Product or FAQ markup with the Schema Generator and publish an llms.txt file for AI tools that read one.
- 6
Re-measure and repeat
Run the same questions again after your changes are crawled. Compare mention rate, citation rate and the sources cited, then work on the questions where you are still missing.

What is GEO in SEO?
GEO stands for generative engine optimization. Inside SEO it refers to the part of the work aimed at AI-written answers (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews) rather than classic ranked links. Note that “geo SEO” is sometimes used to mean local or geographic SEO; if that is what you need, see our local SEO guide.
Is generative engine optimization the same as AEO?
They overlap heavily. AEO (answer engine optimization) focuses on formatting content as direct answers that engines can lift; GEO is the broader effort to be retrieved, trusted and cited by generative AI. In practice, the same page changes serve both.
Are there free generative engine optimization tools?
Yes, at least to start. Digimetrics gives every new account 7 days free with no card, so you can run the AI Mentions Tracker, AI Readiness Check, llms.txt Generator and AI Page Rewrite on your site.
How long does GEO take to work?
There is no fixed timeline. AI engines that search the web can only use a change after they recrawl the page, and OpenAI and Perplexity both say robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to take effect for their search bots. Re-measure on a schedule rather than daily.
Can GEO guarantee that ChatGPT recommends my brand?
No. Nobody can guarantee AI citations, and OpenAI states that placement in ChatGPT search is not guaranteed. GEO improves your odds by removing blockers and making your pages easier to quote, and measurement tells you whether it worked.
Does keyword stuffing help with AI answers?
The GEO paper tested it and found little to no improvement in AI answer visibility. Google's spam policies also treat keyword stuffing as spam. Specific facts, cited sources and plain language did far better in the research.
