CHATGPT SEO
How to rank in ChatGPT and get your brand recommended
To rank in ChatGPT, first let OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, reach your site: OpenAI says sites that block it will not appear in ChatGPT search answers. Then make your pages easy to quote, get mentioned on the third-party sites ChatGPT cites, and track how often it names you. Digimetrics' AI Mentions Tracker measures this in 2 to 5 minutes.

The short answer
- ChatGPT answers in two ways: from what the model learned in training, and from live web search with cited sources. You can influence the second far more directly.
- OAI-SearchBot controls whether your site can appear in ChatGPT search; GPTBot controls training use. They are separate settings, so you can allow one and block the other.
- ChatGPT search rewrites a question into targeted queries sent to search providers, so ordinary search visibility still matters.
- Third-party pages (reviews, comparisons, directories, forums) often shape which brands ChatGPT recommends. Find which ones it cites for your category.
- OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed. Treat this as a measured loop, not a trick.
How does ChatGPT decide which brands to recommend?
When ChatGPT searches the web, it rewrites your question into one or more search queries, reads the results, and writes an answer with citations. Brands that appear clearly and often in those results are the ones it tends to name.
OpenAI's help article on ChatGPT search gives a concrete example: a question about cancer drugs targeting CCR8 might first become the search query “CCR8 immunotherapy drug development 2025”, followed by more specific queries after reviewing the first results. For a local question like “good restaurants near me”, ChatGPT may rewrite it as “top restaurants San Francisco” using your approximate location.
Two things follow for brands. First, the rewritten query is usually a plain, keyword-style search, so classic search visibility for category terms still feeds ChatGPT. Second, ChatGPT reads several sources and blends them, which means a roundup or review page that names you can matter as much as your own homepage. OpenAI adds that it ranks results using multiple factors intended to surface relevant, reliable information, and that placement is not guaranteed.
Answers from memory (no web search) reflect training data, which you cannot edit after the fact. Answers with search are where your next change can show up.
OAI-SearchBot vs GPTBot vs ChatGPT-User: which to allow
Allow OAI-SearchBot if you want to appear in ChatGPT search. GPTBot only governs whether your content may be used to train OpenAI's models, and you can block it without leaving ChatGPT search.
OpenAI documents each agent separately and says each setting is independent. Here is what each one does, in OpenAI's own terms:
- Robots.txt to appear in search but opt out of training: User-agent: OAI-SearchBot / Allow: /, then User-agent: GPTBot / Disallow: /.
- OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours after a robots.txt update for its search systems to adjust.
- Firewalls and CDNs can block bots even when robots.txt allows them. OpenAI publishes the IP ranges for each bot.
| OpenAI agent | What it does | If you block it |
|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | Surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search features | Your site will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though it can still appear as a navigational link |
| GPTBot | Crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI's generative AI foundation models | Signals your content should not be used for training; does not remove you from search |
| ChatGPT-User | Visits a page when a user's request in ChatGPT or a Custom GPT needs it | User-initiated, so robots.txt rules may not apply; not used to decide search inclusion |
| OAI-AdsBot | Checks landing pages submitted as ChatGPT ads | Only visits pages submitted as ads; not used for training |
How to rank higher in ChatGPT search results
To rank higher in ChatGPT search, be the clearest, most specific source for the exact question, and be named on the other pages ChatGPT reads for that question.
There is no public ChatGPT ranking factor list, so rely on what is documented plus what you can measure. Documented: OAI-SearchBot access, and that ChatGPT uses search providers with rewritten queries. Measured in research: the GEO paper (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024) found that adding cited sources, quotations and statistics to a page raised its visibility in AI-written answers by 30 to 40% on its benchmark, while keyword stuffing did little.
In practice that gives you a page checklist for each buying question:
- A heading that matches the question, followed by a 40 to 60 word answer that names your brand and category.
- Concrete facts in place of adjectives: prices, limits, integrations, locations, turnaround times.
- A comparison table against the alternatives buyers consider (be fair; ChatGPT reads competitors' pages too).
- Proof with sources: reviews, case data you can show, third-party coverage.
- A visible FAQ for the follow-up questions, marked up with FAQ schema.
A worked example: reading a ChatGPT visibility report
A useful report shows, per question, whether ChatGPT and other engines named you, how positively, how early, and which sources they cited. The weakest question is your first job.
In the official tutorial's sample (fictional brand Brightpath, a work-management app), the AI Mentions Tracker asked 3 buyer questions across five engines: GPT-4o, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overview. The brand was named in 12 of 15 answers (80%). That sounds good until you look per question: one question averaged only 38% visibility.
Here is how to turn a report like that into actions:
| What the report shows | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Named often, rarely linked (low citation rate) | Engines know the brand but do not see your page as the source | Add a quotable answer, specifics and FAQ to the page that should be cited |
| Named late in answers (low position) | You are an also-ran in the sources the engine read | Strengthen comparison content and get listed on the roundups being cited |
| Not named for one question | No retrieved page connects you to that need | Create or rewrite one page aimed squarely at that question |
| Negative or mixed sentiment | Cited sources include complaints or outdated reviews | Address the issue publicly and update the facts on your own pages |
| Same third-party site cited every time | That site is shaping the answer | Make sure it lists you accurately; pitch an update |
What tools help you rank in ChatGPT?
You need a tool that asks ChatGPT (and the other engines) your buyers' questions on a schedule and shows mentions and sources, plus tools to fix what it finds.
Checking by hand in a single chat is misleading: answers vary between runs, accounts and locations, and you cannot see trends. When comparing the best tools to rank in ChatGPT, look for multi-engine coverage, visible source lists and repeatable question sets.
The Digimetrics workflow for ChatGPT SEO fits inside the 7-day free trial for a first pass: the AI Mentions Tracker, AI Readiness Check, AI Page Rewrite and Schema Generator. If you would rather hand the work to someone, the same tools are what an agency should be showing you. Ask any agency offering to rank you in ChatGPT for a baseline report before they start, and walk away if they promise guaranteed placement.
Does Google ranking help you rank in ChatGPT?
Often, yes, indirectly. ChatGPT search sends rewritten queries to search providers, so pages that are visible in web search are more likely to be read. But it is not a one-to-one copy of Google's results.
OpenAI names Microsoft among the search providers ChatGPT may use, and says it sends targeted queries to them. That means Bing visibility, not only Google, deserves a look; the Rank Checker can check Google, Bing or Yahoo positions. It also means the basics in our AI SEO checklist apply.
The differences show up in the blending. A page ranked fifth can still be cited if it states the answer more clearly than the top result. The GEO research found exactly that pattern: lower-ranked pages gained the most from adding citations. For the same playbook on other engines, see how to rank in Perplexity and how to appear in Google AI Overviews.
HOW IT WORKS
How to get your brand mentioned in ChatGPT: seven steps
- 1
Ask ChatGPT what your buyers ask
Write down 3 to 10 real buying questions, like “best payroll app for a 20-person company”. Run them through the AI Mentions Tracker to get a baseline mention rate, sentiment, position and the sources cited.
- 2
Allow OAI-SearchBot
Check robots.txt and your CDN or firewall. OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot and requests from its published IP ranges. The AI Readiness Check flags blocked AI bots.
- 3
Fix the pages ChatGPT would retrieve
Make sure your key pages are indexable and fast. A Full Site Audit lists SEO, speed and GEO fixes in priority order.
- 4
Answer the buying question on your own page
Put a one-sentence answer, a comparison table and an FAQ on the page that should win. AI Page Rewrite drafts these for up to 3 AI questions.
- 5
Close the third-party gap
Look at the sources the tracker shows. If ChatGPT keeps citing a review site or roundup that does not list you, that page is your outreach target.
- 6
Describe your brand consistently
Use the same name, category and one-line description everywhere. Add Organization schema with the Schema Generator and publish an llms.txt file with the llms.txt Generator.
- 7
Re-run the same questions monthly
Compare mention rate and sources over time. Schedule the check rather than testing by hand, because single chats vary.

Can you pay to rank in ChatGPT?
Not in the organic answers. OpenAI says ChatGPT ranks search results using multiple factors and that placement is not guaranteed. OpenAI does run ads in ChatGPT (its OAI-AdsBot checks ad landing pages), but those are separate from the organic answer.
How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?
Robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to reach ChatGPT search, according to OpenAI. Content changes depend on when your pages are recrawled and when buyers' questions trigger a search, so measure monthly rather than daily.
Should I block GPTBot?
Block GPTBot only if you do not want your content used to train OpenAI's models. It does not affect ChatGPT search, which uses OAI-SearchBot. Our guide on whether to block GPTBot and other AI crawlers covers the trade-offs.
Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor and not me?
Usually because the sources it read for that question mention your competitor and not you, or describe them more clearly. Check which sources were cited for that question, then improve your own page and get listed on those sources.
Does an llms.txt file help with ChatGPT?
It may help AI tools that read one find your key pages, and it costs little to publish. OpenAI does not list llms.txt as a requirement for ChatGPT search; OAI-SearchBot access is the documented requirement.
What is ChatGPT SEO?
ChatGPT SEO is the work of getting your brand named and linked in ChatGPT's answers: allowing OAI-SearchBot, making pages easy to quote, earning mentions on cited sources, and tracking your mention rate over time. It is one part of generative engine optimization.
