HOW IT WORKS
How to check keyword rankings in three steps
- 1
Enter your keywords and domain
Add the searches you care about and your domain. Any page of yours in the top 100 counts, so you do not need to guess which URL ranks.
- 2
Choose the engine and location
Pick Google, Bing or Yahoo and a country. Add a city for local results and switch on mobile if most of your visitors use phones.
- 3
Read positions and movement
You get your average position, the page-one count and a row per keyword with its position and change since the last check, plus a weekly chart.
Takes 30 seconds to 2.5 minutes. Included on every plan.
What is keyword ranking, and why check it?
Keyword ranking is the position your page holds in search results for a given search. Position 1 is the top result; positions 1 to 10 are usually page one.
Rankings are the earliest signal that your SEO work is landing. Traffic and sales lag behind; positions move first. If a keyword climbs from 40 to 15, nobody new has clicked yet, but you know the page is gaining ground and deserves another push.
Rank Checker is built around that idea. In the official tutorial's sample (fictional brand Brightpath), “performance improvement plan” moved up 31 places to position 12, two spots off page one. That single row tells you exactly which page to improve next. If you are new to the vocabulary, our glossary defines the SERP and click-through rate in a sentence each.
How to check keyword ranking of a website: manual, Search Console or a rank checker
You can search by hand, read Google Search Console, or use a rank checker. Manual checks are skewed by your location and history; Search Console shows averages; a rank checker shows a clean position per keyword and location.
Each method answers a slightly different question. Use the table to pick the right one, or combine them. Search Console's own help notes that its average position is “the average position of the topmost result from your site” over the period, which is great for trends but blurs where you stand in one city today.
| Method | What you get | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| Search Google yourself | A quick look at one keyword | Results shift with your location, device and search history |
| Google Search Console | Average position, clicks and impressions for your own site | Averages across places and days; Google only; no competitors |
| Google Analytics | Visits from organic search | Does not show keyword positions at all |
| Rank Checker | Position, change and page-one count per keyword | One location and day per check; re-run to track change |

What keywords is my site ranking for?
Rank Checker checks the keywords you give it. To discover every keyword a site already ranks for, use a site-wide lookup first, then track the best ones.
Two tools cover the discovery step. Keyword Research has a mode that shows what any site already ranks for, with volume and difficulty on each row. Page Technical & Domain Analysis groups a domain's organic keywords by position band, which is where you find the page-two keywords (positions 11 to 20) closest to a breakthrough.
Once you have that shortlist, Rank Checker becomes your website ranking checker for the terms that matter: run it before you change a page, then again after, and the change column tells you whether the work paid off.
Is there a free keyword rank checker that explains what to fix?
Your first checks are free: new accounts get every tool unlocked for 7 days with no card, enough to check dozens of keywords. The result then links straight to the tools that fix what you find.
A position on its own does not tell you what to do. That is why Rank Checker sits beside the tools that act on it. When a keyword is stuck on page two, open On-Page Optimisation to compare that page with the top three results and get the rewrites. When a rival keeps outranking you, Competitors Identifier lists who sits above you across your shared keywords.
- Average position across everything you checked, for a one-number trend
- Page-one count, so you can report progress in plain terms
- Position per keyword, with 1 as the top
- Change since the last check, with a weekly chart
- Location and device control: country, optional city and mobile
Rank Checker vs Semrush and Ahrefs: which suits a small business?
If you need to check a focused list of keywords, a focused tool usually costs less than a full suite subscription. If you track thousands of keywords daily, a dedicated rank tracker in a larger suite may fit better.
Digimetrics plans include tracked keywords: 25 on Starter ($31 a month billed annually), 250 on Pro and 1,000 on Expert. During the 7-day free trial you can check keywords at no cost. For a feature-by-feature view, read our Semrush alternative and Ahrefs alternative comparisons.
There are so many tools out there but few have the breadth and depth of Digimetrics in finding and fixing SEO, content, web, and social media issues. It's definitely a boon to marketers and agency owners alike.

What is the best keyword rank checker in 2026?
The best keyword rank checker gives you a clean position per keyword for the location you sell in, shows what changed, and points you to the fix. Rank Checker covers Google, Bing and Yahoo, any country with optional city and mobile, in 30 seconds to 2.5 minutes.
How can I check my Google ranking for free?
Sign up for Digimetrics free for 7 days, no card, and run dozens of Google rank checks. Search Console is also free, but it shows averages rather than a position for one place and day.
How do I check keyword ranking manually?
Open a private browser window, set the search location if you can, search the keyword and count down the results to your site. It works for one keyword, but results still vary by device and location, which is why a SERP checker is more reliable.
Can I check rankings in a specific city or on mobile?
Yes. Choose the country, then add an optional city and switch on mobile results. This matters for local businesses, where the map pack and nearby results change by area.
How long does a rank check take?
Between 30 seconds and 2.5 minutes, depending on how many keywords you check.
How do I improve keyword ranking once I know my position?
Start with keywords sitting in positions 11 to 20. Improve that page against the top results with On-Page Optimisation, fix technical issues with the Technical SEO Crawler, then re-run Rank Checker to see the change.
