SEO GLOSSARY
What is a topic cluster?
A topic cluster is a group of interlinked pages about one subject: a broad pillar page linked to several detailed pages on its subtopics. It matters because the structure shows search engines and AI tools that you cover a topic in depth, and helps readers find the next answer they need.

What is a topic cluster in SEO, and how does it work?
The topic cluster model has three parts: a pillar page, cluster pages and the internal links between them.
Google's link guidance says every page you care about should be linked from at least one other page on your site, and that internal anchor text helps people and Google make sense of your site. A cluster applies that idea deliberately, so related pages support each other instead of competing.
- Pillar page: a broad overview of the topic that targets the main keyword.
- Cluster pages: each answers one specific question or subtopic in depth.
- Internal links: every cluster page links to the pillar, and the pillar links to each cluster page, with descriptive anchor text.
Topic cluster example
A plumbing company might build a pillar on "water heater guide" with cluster pages for each question customers search.
This is an illustration, not a real business. Notice each page serves one search intent, and the booking page is where the cluster turns readers into customers.
| Page | Role | Target search |
|---|---|---|
| Water heater guide | Pillar | water heater |
| Tank vs tankless water heater | Cluster (commercial) | tank vs tankless |
| Why is my water heater leaking? | Cluster (informational) | water heater leaking |
| Water heater installation cost | Cluster (commercial) | water heater installation cost |
| Book water heater repair | Cluster (transactional) | water heater repair near me |
How to create a topic cluster
Choose a topic you can own, list the questions people search about it, assign one page per question, then link them all through a pillar.
To see clusters you already have, the keyword strategy builder groups everything a site ranks for into topics with pillar pages. In the official tutorial's sample (fictional brand Brightpath), it found 46 topics from 1,000 keywords. For brand-level planning, the content pillar generator proposes three big themes with subtopics.
- Pick the topic from what your business sells or knows best.
- Collect subtopics and questions with keyword research.
- Group keywords so each page has one job; keyword mapping assigns each keyword to a page and flags gaps.
- Write the pillar and cluster pages, then add the links both ways.
Are topic clusters still relevant? Common mistakes and related terms
Yes. Clusters still organise content around how people search, and AI assistants that fan a question out into related sub-questions reward sites that answer the follow-ups too.
Common mistakes: clusters with no internal links, pillar pages too thin to stand alone, and several cluster pages targeting the same keyword. Related terms: search intent decides each page's format, and anchor text is how the links in a cluster describe each page.

What is the difference between a topic cluster and a pillar page?
The pillar page is one page, the broad overview. The topic cluster is the whole group: the pillar plus the detailed pages and links around it.
How many pages should a topic cluster have?
There is no fixed number. Cover the questions people actually search about the topic; for a small business that may be five pages, for a large publisher dozens.
Do topic clusters help with AI search?
They can. A set of pages that answers a topic and its follow-up questions clearly gives AI tools more relevant passages to cite. They do not guarantee a mention.
What is a topic cluster strategy in SEO?
Planning content as connected groups rather than one-off posts: choose topics, map keywords to pages, and link them so authority and readers flow between related pages.
