SEO GLOSSARY

What is search intent?

Search intent is the goal behind a search: what the person actually wants to learn, find, compare or buy. It matters because Google ranks pages that satisfy that goal, so a brilliant page in the wrong format, like a sales page for a how-to query, rarely reaches page one.

What are the types of search intent in SEO?

SEO usually sorts intent into four types: informational, navigational, commercial and transactional. One keyword can mix them, but one usually dominates.

Local searches such as "dentist near me" combine commercial and transactional intent with a place, which is why Google answers them with a map pack rather than articles.

How to identify search intent, with an example

Search the keyword and look at what already ranks. The format of the top results is Google's clearest statement of what searchers want.

Digimetrics keyword research labels each keyword's intent (to learn, compare or buy) beside volume, difficulty and CPC. Example: "project management software" and "what is project management" share words but need completely different pages.

  1. Read the modifiers: how, what and why lean informational; best, vs and review lean commercial; buy, price and near me lean transactional.
  2. Study the results page: guides, product grids, videos, a map or an AI Overview each hint at intent.
  3. Check the top pages' format and depth: list, comparison table, calculator, product page.
  4. Use a tool at scale when you have dozens or hundreds of keywords.

How to optimize for search intent

Match the format first, then the depth, then the angle. Give searchers the answer they came for near the top of the page.

If the results are lists, write a list. If they are product pages, do not try to rank a blog post. Then cover what the top pages miss. When you already rank but stall on page two, the on-page SEO checker compares your page with the top three results and shows where it falls short, such as missing a comparison table or FAQ.

Intent also shapes AI answers: assistants respond to the question behind the prompt, so pages that answer it directly are easier to quote. Our how to do keyword research guide shows how to group keywords by intent.

Why is search intent important?

Google ranks pages that satisfy what the searcher wants. Matching intent is often the difference between ranking and not, no matter how good the content is.

What is search intent mapping?

Assigning each keyword an intent and the page type that serves it, so every page on your site targets one clear goal. It prevents several pages competing for the same query.

What is search intent in Google Ads?

The same idea applied to ads: bidding on keywords whose intent fits your offer. Transactional keywords usually convert best; informational ones often waste budget.

Can search intent change over time?

Yes. Seasonal events, news and new products can shift what searchers want. Re-check the results page for important keywords a few times a year.
