SEO VS GEO VS AEO
SEO vs GEO vs AEO: what is the difference?
SEO vs GEO comes down to the result you want. SEO (search engine optimization) earns a ranked link in Google or Bing. GEO (generative engine optimization) earns a mention inside AI answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini. AEO (answer engine optimization) shapes content so any engine can lift a direct answer. All three share one foundation: crawlable, useful pages.

The short answer
- SEO wins a position on a results page; GEO wins a mention inside an AI answer; AEO wins the quoted answer itself, in snippets, AI answers or voice.
- Google says optimizing for its generative AI features is still SEO, and that AEO and GEO are terms for AI-focused visibility work.
- Outside Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude use their own search crawlers, so GEO adds crawler checks Google SEO never needed.
- Measurement differs most: SEO tracks rank and clicks, GEO and AEO track whether AI engines name and cite you.
- You do not need three strategies. One foundation plus a few AI-specific checks covers all three.
SEO vs GEO vs AEO compared in one table
The three disciplines differ in the result they chase and how you measure it. The work underneath overlaps heavily.
Use this as the reference. The rows that differ most are the result and the measurement; the rows that differ least are the foundations.

What is SEO vs GEO, in plain words?
SEO gets you onto the list. GEO gets you into the summary someone reads instead of the list.
Picture a buyer searching “best accounting software for freelancers”. In classic search they get ten links and choose. With SEO you work to be one of those links, ideally near the top. In an AI answer, the engine has already read several pages and written a short recommendation with two or three names and a few citations. GEO is the work of being one of those names.
The term GEO comes from a 2023 research paper (Aggarwal et al., accepted to KDD 2024) that measured how editing a page changes its visibility in AI answers. It found that adding cited sources, quotations and statistics lifted visibility by 30 to 40% on its benchmark, while keyword stuffing, a classic old-school SEO tactic, did little. That is the clearest single difference: tactics that once helped rankings do not necessarily help AI answers. Read more in what generative engine optimization is.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. GEO depends on SEO. AI answers on Google are grounded in pages from its Search index, and ChatGPT search sends queries to search providers, so pages that are not crawled and indexed rarely get cited.
Google's guide to generative AI search addresses this directly: from Google Search's perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO. It also says the best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no extra technical requirements beyond being indexed and snippet-eligible.
OpenAI describes ChatGPT search as rewriting a user's question into targeted queries sent to search providers, including Microsoft. So your organic visibility on Bing and Google feeds what ChatGPT reads. GEO adds to SEO; it does not route around it.
If someone pitches GEO as a replacement for SEO, ask how their client's pages will be retrieved by AI if they are not indexed.
Where SEO and GEO actually differ: five practical changes
The differences show up in five places: which crawlers you allow, how you open a page, how you back claims, where your brand gets mentioned, and how you measure.
Everything else, from site speed to internal links, stays the same. These five are the additions:
- Crawlers by name. SEO mostly worried about Googlebot and Bingbot. GEO adds OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot, each documented by its company as the bot that decides search visibility. See which AI crawlers to allow.
- The opening. SEO pages often build up to the answer. AEO and GEO put a 40 to 60 word self-contained answer first, because engines lift passages.
- Evidence. Specific numbers and cited sources matter more, as the GEO research found. Vague adjectives give an AI nothing to quote.
- Off-site mentions. AI answers blend several sources, so a roundup or review site that names you can matter as much as your own page.
- Measurement. A rank tracker cannot see AI answers. You have to ask the engines and record what they say.
What about AIO, LLMO and AI SEO?
They are mostly other names for the same AI-focused work. AIO (AI optimization), LLMO (large language model optimization) and AI SEO all describe making content visible in AI answers.
New acronyms appear faster than new techniques. Here is how they map:
| Term | What people usually mean | Closest to |
|---|---|---|
| AI SEO | SEO that accounts for AI answers, or SEO done with AI tools (context decides) | GEO, or AI-assisted SEO |
| AIO | AI optimization: visibility in AI systems generally | GEO |
| LLMO | Optimizing for large language models specifically | GEO |
| AEO | Formatting content as direct answers | AEO (a distinct, older idea from featured snippets and voice) |
| GEO | Being retrieved, trusted and cited by generative engines | GEO |
Do not let the acronym decide the budget. Ask what the work changes on your site and how the result will be measured. New to the term LLM? See our LLM glossary entry.
SEO vs GEO business impact: where to put your time
Split time by where your buyers decide. If they compare options before buying, AI answers increasingly shape the shortlist, so GEO deserves a measured share. If they search for a specific name or a nearby service, classic SEO and local SEO still carry most of the weight.
We will not quote a universal split, because none is supported by evidence and it varies by industry. Measure instead. Run the same buyer questions through the Rank Checker and the AI Mentions Tracker and look at both scoreboards side by side.
In the official tutorial's sample (fictional brand Brightpath), the AI Mentions Tracker found the brand named in 12 of 15 AI answers (80%), yet one question averaged just 38% visibility. The Rank Checker sample, meanwhile, showed a keyword climbing 31 places to position 12, two spots off page one. Both are near-misses, and both point to a specific page to improve. That is the practical answer to SEO vs GEO: fix whichever near-miss is closest to revenue.
If you work with clients, this side-by-side is also the clearest way to explain the difference; see how agencies present it.
HOW IT WORKS
How to cover SEO, GEO and AEO in one 30-day plan
- 1
Week 1: audit the shared foundation
Run a Full Site Audit. It returns a health score out of 100 and fixes tagged SEO, speed or GEO, so one report feeds all three disciplines.
- 2
Week 1: check AI access
Run the AI Readiness Check for AI bot access, llms.txt and structured data.
- 3
Week 2: baseline both scoreboards
Check rankings with the Rank Checker and AI mentions with the AI Mentions Tracker for the same 3 buyer questions.
- 4
Week 3: rewrite your two most important pages
Answer-first opening, specifics, comparison table, FAQ. AI Page Rewrite drafts these; On-Page Optimisation benchmarks the page against the top three Google results.
- 5
Week 4: re-measure and decide where to invest
Compare rank and mention rate. Put next month's effort where the gap is widest.

What is the difference between SEO and GEO?
SEO aims for ranked links in search engines; GEO aims for mentions and citations inside AI-written answers. GEO builds on SEO's foundation of crawlable, indexed pages, then adds AI crawler access, answer-first content with evidence, and measurement of AI mentions.
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO is about the format of your content: questions answered directly so an engine can quote them. GEO is the wider effort to be retrieved, trusted and cited by generative AI, including crawler access and off-site mentions. Read what answer engine optimization is for the AEO side.
Do I need separate SEO and GEO strategies?
No. One strategy with a shared foundation works for both. Add a few AI-specific items: allow AI search crawlers, open key pages with a direct answer, back claims with sources, and track AI mentions alongside rankings.
Does Google treat GEO differently from SEO?
Google says optimizing for its generative AI features is still SEO and that there are no extra requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Other AI engines run their own crawlers, which is where GEO-specific checks matter.
Which should a small business start with, SEO or GEO?
Start with the shared foundation, since it serves both: a site audit, fixing crawl and speed issues, and making your key pages clear. Then baseline AI mentions with a few buyer questions to see whether GEO needs more attention.
Can any agency guarantee results in SEO or GEO?
No. No tool can guarantee rankings or AI citations, and neither can an agency; and Google warns against providers who promise ranking success. Look for a measured baseline and a clear plan instead.
