AI OVERVIEWS
Google AI Overviews SEO: how to appear in AI Overviews
Google AI Overviews SEO is ordinary SEO aimed at being a supporting link in Google's AI answers. Google says there are no extra requirements: a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Beyond that, the pages most likely to be linked are crawlable, clearly structured and genuinely useful, and you measure results in Search Console.

The short answer
- To be eligible as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet. There is no special markup or file.
- AI Overviews only appear when Google judges them additive to classic results, so many queries never show one.
- Google uses query fan-out, running related searches across subtopics, so a page can be linked for a question it does not target word for word.
- Traffic from AI features is counted in Search Console's Performance report under the Web search type; Google also offers a Generative AI performance report.
- To limit what Google shows, use nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex. Blocking Google-Extended does not remove you from Search.
How do Google AI Overviews choose which sites to link?
AI Overviews ground their answer in pages from Google's Search index, using its core ranking systems to retrieve them, and often run several related searches (query fan-out) to find more supporting pages.
Google's guide to generative AI search names two techniques. Retrieval-augmented generation, or grounding, relies on core Search ranking systems to retrieve relevant, up-to-date pages and then shows prominent links to the pages that support the answer. Query fan-out generates related queries to gather more results. Google's own example: for “how to fix a lawn that's full of weeds”, fan-out queries might include “best herbicides for lawns”, “remove weeds without chemicals” and “how to prevent weeds in lawn”.
That is why AI Overviews often link a wider and more diverse set of sites than the classic top ten, as Google itself notes. A page that answers one subquestion well can be linked even if it does not rank for the original query. It also means there is no shortcut around the index: if Google has not indexed your page, it cannot be grounded on.
Google adds that AI Overviews and AI Mode may use different models and techniques, so the links each shows will vary for the same question.
What Google says you do (and do not) need for AI Overviews
You need the same things as for Search: indexing, snippet eligibility, crawlable content and helpful pages. You do not need llms.txt, special schema or content chopped into chunks.
Google is unusually direct on this. Its AI features page says you do not need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup to appear, and there is no special schema.org structured data to add. Its generative AI guide goes further with a short myth list. Here is that guidance in one place:
| Common advice | Google's position | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|
| Add an llms.txt file to get into AI Overviews | Google Search doesn't use llms.txt; it neither harms nor helps | Publish one for other AI tools if useful, but do not expect a Google effect |
| Break content into tiny chunks for AI | Not required; Google understands multiple topics on a page | Organize with clear headings for readers |
| Rewrite everything for AI | Not needed; AI systems understand synonyms and meaning | Write naturally for your audience |
| Add special AI schema | No special schema.org markup needed | Keep normal structured data accurate and matching the page |
| Buy or seed mentions | Inauthentic mentions are not as helpful as they seem; spam systems apply | Earn genuine coverage and reviews |
| Create a page for every query variation | Doing it to manipulate rankings violates the scaled content abuse policy | Build fewer, better pages |
How does Google AI Overview affect SEO and traffic?
AI Overviews change how a results page looks and which links get seen, but Google says the same SEO fundamentals decide eligibility, and that clicks from pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality.
Google states that when people click from results pages with AI Overviews, those visits are more likely to spend more time on the site. It does not publish how click volume changes, and we will not guess a number here. What you can do is measure your own site: AI Overview and AI Mode appearances count toward your overall Search Console data in the Performance report, under the Web search type, and Google has added a Generative AI performance report for its AI features.
If you see impressions hold while clicks fall for informational queries, that is the pattern to investigate. Our SEO diagnostics tool reads your Search Console numbers and flags declining keywords, and the Search Console integration summarizes changes, free and read-only. Google AI Mode SEO: is it different from AI Overviews?
The eligibility rules are the same, but AI Mode is built for longer, multi-step questions and comparisons, so it rewards pages that answer follow-up questions and compare options clearly.
Google describes AI Overviews as a quick gist with links to explore, shown only when they add something beyond classic results. AI Mode is a conversational experience for exploration, reasoning and complex comparisons, where people ask nuanced questions that might have taken several searches before. Users on mobile can move from an AI Overview into AI Mode and keep asking.
For your content, that means comparison tables, pros and cons, and answers to the second and third question matter more in AI Mode. If you sell locally or online, Google also points to keeping Merchant Center and Business Profile information up to date, since AI responses can include product listings and local business details. Our local SEO guide covers the Business Profile side.
How to remove or disable AI Overviews
Searchers cannot switch AI Overviews off, but they can use the Web filter to see only links. Site owners can limit how their content appears with snippet controls or noindex.
These are two different questions, so here are both answers.
As a searcher: Google's help center says AI Overviews are a core Search feature, like knowledge panels, and features cannot be turned off. You can select the Web filter after a search to see text links without AI Overviews. Separately, the “AI in Search” experiments in Labs can be toggled off, which affects Labs features rather than standard AI Overviews.
As a site owner: Google says robots.txt rules for Googlebot are the control for how your site is crawled for Search, and AI is part of Search. To limit what is shown from your pages, use the preview controls below. Changes only apply after Google recrawls the page, which Google says can take from several days to several months.
| Control | What it does | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| nosnippet (robots meta) | No text snippet for the page in Search, including AI features | Your normal results lose their description too |
| data-nosnippet (HTML attribute) | Excludes a marked section of text from snippets | Granular; the rest of the page can still be shown |
| max-snippet:[number] | Caps snippet length | Very short limits reduce how useful your result looks |
| noindex | Removes the page from Search entirely | No organic traffic from that page at all |
| Google-Extended (robots.txt token) | Limits use for Gemini training and grounding in Gemini Apps and Vertex AI | Does not affect inclusion in Google Search or AI Overviews |
What tools help with Google AI Overviews SEO?
Start with Google's free Search Console for eligibility and performance, then use tools that check technical readiness and test whether AI Overview mentions your brand for buyer questions.
Google warns site owners to be wary of third-party tools that promise ranking success or claim to use internal Google metrics; no third-party tool has access to its ranking or AI systems. A useful tool shows you observable things: what Google can crawl, what your page says, and what the AI answer actually contained.
In Digimetrics, the Full Site Audit lists crawl, speed and GEO issues in priority order; the AI Readiness Check checks bot access and structured data; and the AI Mentions Tracker includes Google AI Overview among the five engines it asks. HOW IT WORKS
How to show up in Google AI Overviews: six steps
- 1
Confirm the page is indexed and snippet-eligible
Use URL Inspection in Search Console, and check you have no nosnippet or noindex on pages you want linked. The Google Crawler Simulator shows the title, description, canonical and text Google reads.
- 2
Clear crawl blockers in robots.txt and your CDN
Google lists allowing crawling “in robots.txt, and by any CDN or hosting infrastructure” as a best practice. A Technical SEO Crawler run finds broken tags and blocked pages.
- 3
Make the key content text, not pictures
Important content should be available as text. Support it with good images and video where they help.
- 4
Write for the fan-out questions
List the subquestions a searcher would have next and answer each under its own heading. AI Page Rewrite adds a one-sentence answer, comparison table and FAQ block.
- 5
Keep structured data honest
Structured data must match the visible text. Generate valid JSON-LD with the Schema Generator and test it in Google's Rich Results tool.
- 6
Measure in Search Console and beyond
Watch the Generative AI performance report and Web search type. Use the AI Mentions Tracker to see whether Google AI Overview names your brand for buyer questions.
QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK
Frequently asked questions
Still unsure? Email support@digimetrics.ai and a person will reply.
How do I rank in Google AI Overviews?
Make sure the page is indexed and eligible for a snippet, allow crawling in robots.txt and your CDN, answer the question and its follow-ups clearly in text, and keep structured data accurate. Google says there are no other special requirements, and no tool can guarantee inclusion.
Do I need schema markup for AI Overviews?
No. Google says there is no special schema.org markup needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Structured data is still worth using for rich results, as long as it matches the visible page.
Does llms.txt help with Google AI Overviews?
No. Google says Google Search does not use llms.txt and that the file will neither help nor harm your visibility in Search. It can still be useful for other AI tools; see our llms.txt guide.
Why doesn't my query show an AI Overview?
Google only shows AI Overviews when its systems decide they add something beyond classic results, so they often don't trigger. Track the questions that do show one for your topic.
Where do I see AI Overview traffic in Search Console?
Clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the Performance report under the Web search type. Google also provides a Generative AI performance report for its AI features.
Will blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?
No. Google-Extended controls use of your content for Gemini model training and grounding in Gemini Apps and Vertex AI. Google says it does not affect inclusion in Google Search. Use nosnippet or noindex to limit Search.
