AI SEO GLOSSARY

What is an AI Overview?

An AI Overview is an AI-generated summary Google shows at the top of some search results, with links to the web pages it drew on. It matters because it answers the question before the blue links, so being cited inside it is becoming as valuable as ranking below it.

What is an AI Overview on Google, and how does it work?

AI Overviews use a custom Gemini model to summarise a topic and link to supporting pages. Google rolled them out to everyone in the U.S. in May 2024.

Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a query fan-out technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to build a response, then finding supporting pages to link. AI Overviews only appear when Google's systems judge them additive to classic Search, so many queries do not trigger one.

AI Mode is a separate, conversational experience for questions that need more exploration. The two may use different models and show different links.

How do you get cited in an AI Overview?

Google says there are no additional requirements: to be eligible as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. Standard SEO best practices apply.

Our guide on how to appear in Google AI Overviews works through each point with examples, and the AI page rewrite tool adds a one-sentence answer, comparison table and FAQ block to a page.

  • Be indexable: no accidental noindex, blocked resources or nosnippet on key pages.
  • Answer directly: open with a clear, quotable sentence, then the detail.
  • Cover follow-up questions, since fan-out searches look for subtopics.
  • Be specific and trustworthy: real numbers, named sources, visible authors.
  • Make pages easy to find through internal links and structured data that matches visible content.

How to measure AI Overview visibility, with an example

Search Console counts AI Overview appearances inside the Performance report's Web search type, but does not separate them. To see whether you are named, check the answers directly.

Digimetrics AI mentions tracker includes Google AI Overview alongside GPT-4o, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, and reports mention rate, citation rate, position and the sources cited, for up to 10 questions per run. In the official tutorial's sample (fictional brand Brightpath), one buyer question averaged only 38% visibility across engines, which made it the priority page to fix.

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK

Frequently asked questions

Still unsure? Email support@digimetrics.ai and a person will reply.

Can an AI Overview be wrong?

Yes. Like any LLM output, an AI Overview can misstate facts. That is one reason clear, accurate, well-sourced pages matter: they give the model better material to summarise.

Why is an AI Overview not available for my search?

Google only shows an AI Overview when its systems judge it adds value beyond the classic results, so many queries never trigger one.

Is AI Overview generative AI?

Yes. AI Overviews are generated by a custom Gemini model, then linked to supporting web pages.

Can I stop my content appearing in AI Overviews?

Google says to use nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex to limit what is shown from your pages in Search, which also applies to AI features.
