SEO GLOSSARY

What is a zero-click search?

A zero-click search is a search that ends without the person clicking any result, because the answer appeared on the results page or they searched again. It matters because a growing share of searches never send a visit, so visibility on the page itself now counts.

How common are zero-click searches?

A 2024 SparkToro study of Datos clickstream data found 58.5% of US Google searches and 59.7% of EU searches ended with zero clicks.

The same study found that for every 1,000 US Google searches, only 360 clicks went to the open web (sites not owned by Google and not paid ads); in the EU it was 374. Almost half of mobile searches ended the session entirely, more than twice the desktop rate. The author notes the figures likely undercount, since they exclude voice searches and the Google app.

Zero-click is not all lost demand. Some searchers were satisfied by a quick fact, some refined their query, and some saw your brand and came back later.

Search features that answer the question on the page: AI Overviews, featured snippets, knowledge panels, local packs and instant answers.

The pattern: simple, factual searches are most likely to end without a click; considered, high-value decisions still drive visits.

How to optimize for zero-click searches

Aim to be the source the results page shows, and make your brand memorable even when nobody clicks.

The Search Console integration (free and read-only to connect) shows impressions and CTR side by side, so you can spot queries shown often but rarely clicked. The AI mentions tracker checks whether Google AI Overview and four AI assistants name your brand. Our guide on how to appear in Google AI Overviews covers the page-level fixes.

  • Answer in the first sentence so AI Overviews and snippets can quote you.
  • Add structured data so listings show ratings, prices and FAQs.
  • Complete your Google Business Profile for local searches that end in calls.
  • Target considered queries (comparisons, costs, how to choose) where clicks still happen.
  • Track impressions as well as clicks to see visibility you are earning.
