SEO GLOSSARY

What is keyword difficulty?

Keyword difficulty (KD) is a score that estimates how hard it is to reach page one of Google for a keyword. It matters because it stops you spending months on terms you cannot win yet, and points you to keywords your site can rank for now.

How is keyword difficulty calculated?

Each SEO tool calculates KD its own way, mostly from the strength of the pages already on page one, especially their backlinks and domain authority. Scores are usually shown on a 0 to 100 scale.

Because the formula is proprietary, a KD of 30 in one tool is not a KD of 30 in another. What stays constant is the logic: the stronger the sites already ranking, the harder the keyword.

KD is also relative to you. A keyword that is hard for a new site can be easy for an established one, which is why the most useful reading weighs the keyword's difficulty against your own site's authority.

How to check keyword difficulty, with an example

Run your keywords through a keyword tool and read difficulty next to volume. Digimetrics Keyword Analysis colours difficulty green when page one is within reach.

In keyword research, add your website and the tool also estimates time to rank. For a dedicated forecast, Time to Rank weighs your site authority against up to 8 keywords and returns a range in months.

In the official tutorial's sample (fictional brand Brightpath), "work management" had difficulty 21 with 720 searches a month, and Time to Rank forecast page one in 2 to 3 months.

Difficulty bandWhat it usually meansTypical play
LowWeak or thin pages on page oneTarget now with one strong page
MediumEstablished sites, some gapsStrong content plus a few links
HighBig brands with deep link profilesBuild authority first, target later

What is a good keyword difficulty score?

A good score is one your site can realistically beat. For newer sites that usually means the low end of the scale; for established sites, the bar is higher.

Do not judge KD alone. Pair it with search volume and intent: a low-difficulty keyword nobody buys from is a poor target, while a moderate one with clear buying intent may be worth months of work. Then open the actual results page. If the top results are forum threads or thin pages, the real difficulty may be lower than the score suggests.
