TIME TO RANK
How long does SEO take for your site and your keywords?
How long SEO takes depends on two things: how strong your site is and how hard the keyword is. Digimetrics Time to Rank weighs your domain's authority against each keyword's difficulty and returns a forecast range in months for up to 8 keywords. It takes 20 seconds to 1.5 minutes.

The short answer
- There is no single answer to how long SEO takes; the honest answer is a range per keyword, per site.
- Time to Rank forecasts months to page one by weighing your site authority against keyword difficulty.
- You enter your domain, up to 8 target keywords and a market; results arrive in under 1.5 minutes.
- Your first forecasts are included in the 7-day free trial every new account gets.
- Use it to pick keywords that fit your timeline, and to set expectations with a boss or client.
WHAT YOU GET BACK
What the forecast tells you
- Position todayWhere your site ranks on Google right now
- DifficultyHow hard page one is
- Time to rankA range in months, or page one already
- Why this estimateToday’s position first, then the difficulty
From the official tutorial“work management” already ranks #7, on page one: improve that page rather than build a new one. (Sample brand “Brightpath”.)
HOW IT WORKS
How to forecast your time to rank in three steps
- 1
Enter your domain
Your own site, so the forecast reflects your authority, not an average site's.
- 2
Add up to 8 keywords and a market
The searches you want to win, plus the country and language you sell in.
- 3
Read the range for each keyword
Each row shows difficulty and a forecast in months, with a method note explaining how your authority was weighed against it.
Takes 20 seconds to 2 minutes. Included on every plan.
How long does it take to rank on Google?
Google's own guidance says some changes take effect in a few hours and others take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging whether a change worked. For a new page to reach page one, the gap between your authority and the keyword's difficulty decides most of the wait.
That is why one blanket number, such as “SEO takes six months”, misleads more often than it helps. A strong site can win an easy keyword quickly. A young site chasing a crowded keyword may wait far longer, or never get there without more links.
Time to Rank turns that general truth into a number you can plan with. In the official tutorial's sample (fictional brand Brightpath), “work management” had difficulty 21 and a forecast of page one in 2 to 3 months. A keyword with much higher difficulty would show a longer range for the same site, which is your cue to start with the easier one.
What decides how long SEO takes?
Site authority and keyword difficulty set the baseline; the quality of your page, your technical health and how fast Google recrawls you speed it up or slow it down.
Time to Rank models the two biggest factors. The rest are in your hands, and each has a tool that checks it.
| Factor | Effect on the timeline | How to check it |
|---|---|---|
| Site authority | Stronger domains rank faster for the same keyword | Authority score in Page Technical & Domain Analysis |
| Keyword difficulty | Harder page ones take longer to break into | Difficulty column in Keyword Research or Time to Rank |
| Page quality vs the top results | A thinner page than the top three slows you down | On-Page Optimisation benchmark |
| Technical health | Crawl and indexing problems delay everything | Technical SEO Crawler issue list |
| Backlinks to the page | New links from relevant sites can shorten the wait | Backlink Checker |

How long does it take to rank higher on Google for a page that already ranks?
Usually less time than a new page, because Google already knows it. Pages sitting just off page one (positions 11 to 20) are the quickest wins.
If a page already ranks somewhere, improving it is often faster than publishing something new. Check its position with Rank Checker, then compare it with the three pages above it using On-Page Optimisation. The forecast in Time to Rank is a good upper bound for a fresh page; an existing page with good signals can move sooner.
Google Maps rankings are a different case. Local results lean on your Google Business Profile, reviews and proximity, so a keyword forecast based on website authority is only part of the picture. Our local SEO guide covers the map side.
Why use a forecast instead of a rule of thumb?
Because it changes which keywords you pick. A forecast per keyword lets you mix quick wins with longer bets instead of waiting months on one hard term.
For business owners, it answers “when will this pay off?” before you spend on content. For freelancers and agencies, it sets honest expectations with clients up front, which Google itself recommends asking any SEO about: what results they expect and in what timeframe. No tool can guarantee a ranking, and Time to Rank does not try; it shows a reasonable range and explains its method.
Build your shortlist first with Keyword Research, which shows volume, difficulty and intent for up to 25 keywords. Then forecast the best 8 here. When you are ready to plan the whole site, Keyword Strategy Builder groups keywords into topics and pillar pages.
- Difficulty for each keyword, so you see why the range is what it is
- Time to rank as a range in months
- Method note: your site authority weighed against keyword difficulty
Time to Rank vs Semrush and Ahrefs: which is better for a small business?
Big suites show difficulty scores and leave the timeline to you. Time to Rank converts difficulty and your authority into a months range, in under 1.5 minutes.
If you already pay for a large suite, you can keep using its difficulty scores and add the forecast when you need to plan. If you do not, Digimetrics gives you the research, the forecast and the tracking in one place, starting free. See our Ahrefs alternative comparison for the wider picture.

How long does SEO take to work for a new website?
Longer than for an established one, because a new domain has little authority. Start with low-difficulty keywords, where Time to Rank will show the shortest ranges, and build links while those pages climb.
How long does it take to start ranking on Google?
Google says some changes can show in a few hours while others take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging a change. Reaching page one for a specific keyword depends on its difficulty and your site's strength.
How long does it take to rank number 1 on Google?
Nobody can promise a number 1 position, and Google warns against anyone who does. Time to Rank forecasts how long reaching page one is likely to take; moving from page one to the top spot depends on how your page compares with the results above it.
How accurate is the Time to Rank forecast?
It is an estimate based on your domain authority and each keyword's difficulty, shown as a range with a method note. Your actual timeline also depends on page quality, technical health and new links.
How long does a forecast take?
20 seconds to 1.5 minutes for up to 8 keywords. New accounts can try it free for 7 days, no card needed.
How long does it take to rank on Google Maps?
Map rankings depend mostly on your Google Business Profile, reviews and distance to the searcher, so a website-based forecast covers only part of it. Run the Local SEO Check and follow our local SEO guide for the map side.
