SEO GLOSSARY
What is search volume?
Search volume is the estimated number of times a keyword is searched in a given market each month. It matters because it sizes the demand behind a topic: it tells you how many people you could reach, though not whether you can rank or whether they will buy.

What is search volume in SEO and keyword research?
In SEO, search volume is usually an average of monthly searches over the past year for one exact keyword in one country. It is an estimate, not a count of visitors.
Google's Keyword Planner gives advertisers estimates of the searches a keyword receives each month, and SEO tools build similar figures from their own data. Numbers differ between tools, so compare keywords within one tool rather than across several.
Three details trip people up. Volume is per market, so a US figure says nothing about the UK. It is averaged, so seasonal terms like "pool heater repair" swing far above and below it. And it measures searches, not clicks: if Google answers the question on the results page, many of those searches never reach a website.
Where can search volume be checked? An example
Use a keyword research tool for SEO or Google Keyword Planner for ads. In Digimetrics, Keyword Analysis returns volume, difficulty, CPC and intent in about a minute.
Paste up to 25 keywords into keyword research, pick the market and language, and read the four columns together. Volume alone can mislead.
In the official tutorial's sample (fictional brand Brightpath), "work management" showed 720 searches a month with difficulty 21, the easiest win in the list. Bigger terms looked tempting but sat out of reach. Your own Search Console data shows real impressions for keywords you already appear for, and pulling it in doesn't cost anything extra.
How much search volume is good?
Good volume is relative: enough searches from the right buyers that you can realistically win. For most small businesses, a reachable keyword with modest volume beats a famous one they will never rank for.
Weigh volume against keyword difficulty and intent. A term with low volume but clear buying intent, like "emergency plumber near me", can bring more customers than a broad term with ten times the searches.

|---|---|---|---|
| Broad head term | High | Hard | Long-term goal |
| Specific mid-tail term | Medium | Moderate | Plan for it |

What does search volume mean?
It means the average number of monthly searches for a keyword in a chosen country. It estimates demand, not traffic you will receive.
Why does search volume differ between tools?
Each tool uses different data sources and models, and Google's own figures are estimates. Use one tool consistently and compare keywords relative to each other.
What is search volume in Google Ads?
In Google Ads, Keyword Planner shows estimated monthly searches so advertisers can forecast reach and cost. SEO uses the same idea to size organic demand.
Is search volume the same as traffic?
No. Even the top result gets only a share of the clicks, and some searches end without any click. Treat volume as the ceiling, not the forecast.
