SEO GLOSSARY
What is a meta description?
A meta description is an HTML tag that summarises a page in a sentence or two, which Google may show as the snippet under your title in search results. It matters because a clear, specific description can win the click, even though it is not a direct ranking factor.

What is a meta description in SEO, and does Google use it?
Google says snippets are created primarily from the page content, but it sometimes uses the meta description when it describes the page better than the content alone.
The tag sits in the page head: <meta name="description" content="…">. Visitors never see it on the page, only in search results and sometimes in link previews.
Because Google chooses the snippet per query, the same page can show different text for different searches. A well-written meta description raises the chance that the text shown is the one you wrote, which is why it still earns its place in every page template.
Meta description length and good examples
Google sets no length limit, but snippets are truncated as needed, so put the important words first. Write for the reader: what the page offers and why to click.
Google also suggests descriptions do not have to be sentences: on a product page, structured details like price, author or size can work well. The examples above are illustrations, not real businesses.

How to check and write meta descriptions
Crawl the site to find missing, duplicate and weak descriptions, fix the highest-traffic pages first, and write a unique description for each.
The technical SEO audit crawls your pages in 30 seconds to 2.5 minutes and lists issues with the number of pages affected. In the official tutorial's sample (fictional brand Brightpath), missing meta descriptions on 6 of 10 pages was the first fix.
For a single important page, the on-page SEO checker shows your current description beside a suggested rewrite benchmarked against the top three results, ready to paste.
- Make every description unique; Google specifically recommends this.
- Match the searcher's intent and include the main keyword naturally.
- Add specifics: price, location, number of examples, delivery time.
- Never stuff a list of keywords.

Is a meta description important for SEO?
Indirectly. It does not lift rankings by itself, but it can raise click-through rate from the same position, which means more visitors.
Can the meta description be the same as the page content?
It can quote the page, but it works best as a short summary written for searchers. Each page should have its own unique description.
Why does Google show a different description from mine?
Google builds snippets mainly from page content to match each query. It uses your meta description when it describes the page better for that search.
How do I add a meta description in Shopify or WordPress?
Shopify has a search engine listing section on each product and page; WordPress SEO plugins add a description box under the editor. Both write the same meta tag.
