SEO GLOSSARY
What is a SERP?
A SERP (search engine results page) is the page Google, Bing or another search engine shows after someone searches. It matters because your position and how much space you take on it decide whether people see you at all, and today's SERP holds ads, AI Overviews and maps as well as blue links.

What is a SERP in digital marketing, and what is on it?
In digital marketing, the SERP is the battleground for both SEO and paid search. It mixes organic results, labelled ads and a range of search features.
Google describes its own process in three stages: crawling, indexing and serving search results. The SERP is the serving stage, the moment your work either shows up or does not.
What appears depends on the query. A recipe search shows rich results with ratings; a "plumber near me" search shows a map pack; a complex question may open with an AI Overview. The same keyword can also look different on mobile, in another city or a week later.
| SERP element | What it is | How you get in |
|---|---|---|
| Organic results | The ranked list of web pages | Relevant content, links, technical health |
| Ads | Paid results, labelled Sponsored | Google Ads bids |
| AI Overview | An AI-written summary with links | Indexed, snippet-eligible, citable content |
| Local pack | Map and three businesses | Google Business Profile, reviews, local signals |
| Rich results | Stars, prices, FAQs, images | Structured data plus quality content |
How to do SERP analysis, with an example
Search your keyword, note which features appear, study who ranks in the top results and why, then decide what kind of page could compete.
Doing this by hand for dozens of keywords is slow. The rank checker reads your position on Google, Bing or Yahoo, and competitor analysis lists the sites ranking for the same searches. In the official tutorial's sample (fictional brand Brightpath), "performance improvement plan" moved up 31 places to position 12, two spots off page one.
- Intent: are the top results guides, product pages or local listings? Match the format.
- Features: is there an AI Overview, video carousel or map pack pushing organic results down?
- Competitors: how strong and how thorough are the pages above you?
- Gaps: what do the top pages miss that you can answer better?
How to win more space on the SERP
Rank higher organically, and also qualify for the features that sit above or beside organic results.
Write titles and descriptions people want to click, add schema markup so pages can earn rich results, keep a complete Google Business Profile for local searches, and structure answers clearly so AI Overviews can cite you. Our guide on how to appear in Google AI Overviews covers the newest part of the page.
