SEO GLOSSARY

What is click-through rate (CTR)?

Click-through rate (CTR) is the percentage of people who click a link after seeing it: clicks divided by impressions. It matters because it shows whether your search listing or ad persuades people, and raising CTR brings more visitors without needing a higher ranking.

How do you calculate click-through rate?

CTR = clicks ÷ impressions × 100. Google's own example: 5 clicks from 100 impressions is a 5% CTR.

An impression is one time your result was shown; a click is one visit. In Google Search Console, CTR is the click count divided by the impression count, where an impression is each time your site appeared in Search results.

Yes, CTR is a percentage, and every keyword, page, ad and email has its own. Averages hide a lot: one page's CTR can look fine overall while it underperforms badly on its most valuable query.

How to measure your search CTR, with an example

Connect Google Search Console and sort queries by impressions. Low CTR on a high-impression query is the cheapest traffic you will ever find.

The Digimetrics Search Console integration is free to connect because it reads your own data, and tells the story in plain English: clicks, impressions, CTR and position against the previous period, plus suggested actions.

In the official tutorial's sample (fictional brand Brightpath), one search was shown 61,300 times with a 3.5% click rate, split across three competing pages. Merging those pages into one clear answer was the fix. For ads, the Google Ads integration reads campaign results the same way.

What is a good click-through rate, and how do you improve it?

Google says a good CTR is relative to what you advertise and where. In organic search it depends heavily on position and on what else is on the results page.

The on-page SEO checker benchmarks your title and description against the top three results and writes a replacement ready to paste.

  • Rewrite the title so it matches the exact query and promises a clear benefit.
  • Write a specific meta description: numbers, price, location, what the reader gets.
  • Earn rich results with structured data so your listing takes more space.
  • Match intent: if searchers want a list, say "12 examples", not "Our thoughts on…".
  • Fix cannibalisation where several of your pages split the same query.

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK

Frequently asked questions

Still unsure? Email support@digimetrics.ai and a person will reply.

Is click-through rate important for SEO?

Yes, as a diagnostic. It shows which listings fail to persuade searchers, and every extra click at the same ranking is extra traffic.

How do I calculate click-through rate for email?

Divide clicks by emails delivered (or opened, depending on your platform's definition) and multiply by 100. State which base you use when comparing campaigns.

What is a good click-through rate for Google Ads?

Google says a good CTR is relative to what you are advertising and on which network. Benchmark against your own campaigns and keywords rather than a universal number.

Does a higher ranking always mean a higher CTR?

Usually, but not always. Ads, AI Overviews and maps above you can pull clicks away, and a compelling listing lower down can outperform a dull one above it.
