SEO GLOSSARY

What is schema markup?

Schema markup is structured data code, usually JSON-LD using the schema.org vocabulary, that labels what a page is about: a business, product, article or FAQ. It matters because it helps search engines understand your content and makes pages eligible for rich results, such as stars and prices, in Google.

What is schema markup used for in SEO?

It turns facts that are obvious to people (this is a price, this is a rating, this is our phone number) into labels machines can read without guessing.

Google describes structured data as a standardized format for providing information about a page and classifying its content. When the markup is valid and the page qualifies, Google can show rich results: review stars, product prices, recipe times, breadcrumbs and more.

Google publishes a case where Nestlé measured an 82% higher click-through rate on pages showing as rich results compared with non-rich result pages. That is one company's result, not a promise, but it explains why structured data is on every technical checklist. It also helps AI tools: clear organisation and product data is easier to quote accurately.

Schema markup example and common types

Google recommends JSON-LD, a script block in the page that does not change what visitors see. Pick the type that matches the page's main content.

A minimal Organization example: <script type="application/ld+json">{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Organization","name":"Brightpath","url":"https://example.com"}</script>. Brightpath here is the fictional brand from the official tutorials.

How to add and check schema markup

Generate the JSON-LD, paste it into the page, then test it with Google's Rich Results Test. Digimetrics Schema Generator does the first and last steps in a few seconds.

The schema markup generator covers 16 types (business, product, article, FAQ and more), checks the code for missing or placeholder values, and opens Google's Rich Results test in one click. In the official tutorial's sample, it produced valid Organization schema ready to paste into the page head.

To find pages missing structured data across a site, the AI readiness check tests structured data alongside llms.txt and AI-bot access in under a minute. The schema markup guide walks through each type in detail.

It is not a direct ranking boost. It helps Google understand the page and can earn rich results, which can make your listing more clickable.

What is the best tool to generate schema markup?

Any tool that outputs valid JSON-LD for the right type and links to Google's Rich Results Test. Digimetrics Schema Generator covers 16 types and checks for missing values.

Where do I put schema markup?

Paste the JSON-LD script into the page's head or body. Most CMS platforms and SEO plugins also have a field for custom structured data.
