What is Perplexity SEO and how is it different from Google SEO?
Perplexity SEO aims for a numbered citation inside a written answer rather than a ranked blue link. The page still has to be crawlable and relevant, but the reward goes to the passage that answers the question most clearly.
Perplexity describes its process in four steps: understand the question, search the web, summarize the most relevant insights, and cite sources with numbered links. It also has modes that go deeper. Its Research feature, for example, performs dozens of searches, reads hundreds of sources and delivers a report in 2 to 4 minutes, according to Perplexity's help center.
That changes what “ranking” means. In Google you compete for one of ten positions. In Perplexity you compete to be one of the handful of sources an answer is built from, and then to be cited early and often within it. The visibility research behind generative engine optimization measured exactly this: how much of an answer draws on a source and how early it appears.
PerplexityBot vs Perplexity-User: which one matters for SEO?
PerplexityBot is the one that matters for appearing in Perplexity search results. Perplexity-User only fetches a page when a user's question needs it.
Perplexity documents two agents, and each robots.txt setting works independently:

Why Perplexity cannot see your site: the firewall problem
Many sites allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt but block it at the firewall or CDN. Perplexity recommends explicit allow rules that combine its user agent with its published IP ranges.
Bot protection is designed to stop automated traffic, and AI crawlers are automated traffic. Cloudflare, for instance, now offers presets to block AI bots by behavior (search, agent or training), and its documentation says that from September 15, 2026, new domains get updated defaults that block training and agent bots on pages with ads while search remains allowed. If your settings predate that, or someone ticked a blanket “block AI bots” option, check what is actually happening.
Perplexity's own WAF guidance for Cloudflare is short:
- Go to Security, then WAF, then Custom rules, and create a new rule.
- Match User Agent contains PerplexityBot (and Perplexity-User if you want live fetches).
- AND match IP Source Address is in Perplexity's published ranges (perplexitybot.json and perplexity-user.json).
- Set the action to Allow, so the requests bypass other security rules.
- Monitor logs to confirm the traffic is getting through; refresh the IP ranges periodically.
How to get more Perplexity citations
Write the passage you would want quoted: a direct answer, specific facts, visible sources, and a structure that separates one question from the next.
Perplexity says it gathers information from authoritative sources such as articles, websites and journals. You cannot control how it judges authority, but you can make your page the most useful source on the topic. The GEO research (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024) found that pages adding citations, quotations and statistics gained 30 to 40% in visibility on its benchmark, and that the Cite Sources method helped most on factual questions, likely because citations give the engine a way to verify facts.
A Perplexity-friendly page usually has:
- A heading phrased as the question, and a 40 to 60 word answer directly underneath.
- Numbers where there were adjectives: prices, sizes, dates, limits, locations.
- Its own sources linked inline, so the facts are verifiable.
- A comparison table for “best X for Y” questions, which are common on Perplexity.
- A visible last-updated date. Perplexity searches in real time and favors up-to-date answers in its own description.
How to use Perplexity for SEO research
Perplexity is also a research tool for SEO: ask it your buyers' questions to see which sources it trusts, which competitors it names, and what angle the answers take.
Each Perplexity answer lists its sources, which makes it a quick way to find the pages shaping your category. Use it to spot the review sites, roundups and forums worth pitching, and to see which subtopics an answer covers that your page skips.
The limit is that one chat is one sample. Answers change with wording, model choice and time, and Perplexity Pro lets users pick between models, so the same question can be answered differently. Is Perplexity good for SEO, and is it worth the effort?
