SEO AUDIT CHECKLIST

The SEO audit checklist: what to check, and in what order

An SEO audit checklist is an ordered list of checks showing whether search engines can find, read and trust your website: indexing, technical health, speed, on-page content, links, local signals and AI visibility. Fix indexing blockers first. Digimetrics Full Site Audit (SEO + AI) runs most checks in 1 to 3.5 minutes.

The short answer

  • Order matters more than length: a page Google cannot index gains nothing from a better title tag.
  • Start with three free checks: a site: search, the Search Console Page indexing report and the URL Inspection tool.
  • Google's Core Web Vitals targets are LCP within 2.5 seconds, INP of 200 milliseconds or less and CLS of 0.1 or less.
  • Sort every finding into four buckets: blocks indexing, hurts every page, hurts one page, nice to have.
  • Re-run the audit after every redesign or migration, and on a monthly schedule in between.

What is an SEO audit checklist (and why the order matters)?

An SEO checklist is a repeatable list of things to verify on a website so it can be crawled, indexed, understood and chosen by searchers. An audit checklist adds order: you check the things that stop everything else from working first.

Most free checklists are flat lists of 50 or 100 items with equal weight. That is how teams end up rewriting meta descriptions on pages that carry a noindex tag. Google's own technical requirements are short: Googlebot is not blocked, the page returns an HTTP 200 status code, and the page has indexable content. If any of those fail, nothing further down the list matters.

So this checklist runs in layers. Can Google reach it? Then is it healthy and fast? Then is each page the best answer? Then do other sites and AI assistants trust it? You can use the same structure for a quick website audit checklist on a 10-page brochure site or a full site audit checklist on a store with thousands of URLs.

If you want the deep version of layer two, our technical SEO checklist covers crawling, rendering and Core Web Vitals in detail.

The complete SEO audit checklist

Here is the full site audit checklist in priority order, with what a pass looks like and the Digimetrics tool that checks it.

Copy the table into a spreadsheet and add two columns, owner and status, and you have a working SEO audit template. Rows near the top are the ones that block indexing; rows near the bottom improve pages that are already eligible to rank.

How to do an on-page SEO audit

To audit on-page SEO, pick the pages that matter most to revenue, then check each one for intent match, title, headings, description, depth, internal links, images and structured data against the pages currently beating it.

A site-wide crawl tells you which pages have missing tags. An on-page audit tells you why a page with all its tags in place still sits on page two. The difference is comparison: you are judging the page against the top three results for its keyword, not against a rulebook.

Work through this list for each money page. In the official tutorial's sample (fictional brand Brightpath), the biggest gap On-Page Optimisation found was depth: 420 words against competitors' fuller pages, with a suggested rewrite of about 900 words including a comparison table and FAQ.

  • Intent: does the page type match what ranks (guide, product page, comparison)?
  • Title and H1: do they describe the page clearly and include the main topic once?
  • Opening: does the first paragraph answer the query directly?
  • Depth: does it cover the subtopics the top results cover, plus something they do not?
  • Internal links: do related pages link here with descriptive anchor text?
  • Images: are they sharp, near relevant text and given descriptive alt text?
  • Structured data: does the markup match what readers see?

Full page-level detail lives in our on-page SEO checklist.

How to prioritise what the audit finds

Sort every finding by how many pages it affects and whether it stops indexing. Fix blockers the same week, site-wide issues next, single-page issues after that.

A typical first audit produces dozens of findings. Without a rule for ordering them, teams fix the easy ones and leave the important ones. Use the four buckets below and give each finding one owner.

In the official tutorial's sample run (fictional brand Brightpath), Full Site Audit scored the site 82 out of 100 and flagged one critical fix: adding an llms.txt file and organisation structured data. In the Technical SEO Crawler sample, the first fix was missing meta descriptions on 6 of 10 pages. Both tools mark severity on every row, so the order is already done for you.

BucketExamplesWhen to fix
Blocks indexingnoindex on key pages, robots.txt block, server errorsImmediately
Hurts every pageSlow template, missing titles site-wide, duplicate URLsThis sprint
Hurts one pageThin content, weak title, poor intent matchNext, starting with pages closest to page one
Nice to haveImage file names, minor heading tidy-upsWhen convenient

Website, landing page and PPC audit checklists: how they differ

An SEO audit asks whether search engines can find and trust your site. A landing page audit asks whether visitors convert, a PPC audit asks whether ad spend pays back, and a marketing audit checklist spans all channels.

People search for these checklists interchangeably, but each answers a different question and needs different evidence. Run the SEO audit first if organic search is your main channel; run the landing page and PPC audits when you are paying for traffic and want to know where it leaks.

What is the best SEO audit tool?

Start with Google Search Console, which is free and shows Google's own indexing and search data. Add a crawler-based audit tool for the checks Search Console does not do, such as speed fixes, backlinks, on-page comparisons and AI visibility.

Google itself is direct about third-party tools: no third-party tool has access to Google's internal ranking or AI systems, so judge any tool's advice against official guidance. A good audit tool earns its place by collecting evidence faster than you could by hand and ordering the fixes, not by promising rankings.

Digimetrics connects your Search Console data for free and adds Full Site Audit for a health score, key signals and a prioritised fix list tagged SEO, speed or GEO. If you want a guided starting point, the free site health check gives a ranked plan to start from. And if the audit points at AI visibility, our guide to measuring AI visibility explains what to track next.

HOW IT WORKS

How to do an SEO audit in eight steps

  1. 1

Confirm Google can index the site

Search Google for site:yourdomain.com, then open Search Console's Page indexing report and inspect your homepage and top pages with the URL Inspection tool.

  2. 2

    Crawl for technical problems

Run the Technical SEO Crawler across your key pages to find broken tags, missing metadata and redirect issues, ranked by severity.

  3. 3

    Test speed on a phone

Check your slowest templates with the page speed test against Google's Core Web Vitals thresholds.

  4. 4

Review on-page elements on money pages

Compare each important page's title, headings, description and depth against the top three results with On-Page Optimisation.

  5. 5

    Check backlinks and authority

Look at referring domains, dofollow share and anchor text with the backlink checker.

  6. 6

Check structured data and local signals

Confirm Organization or LocalBusiness markup is valid and matches what is visible on the page.

  7. 7

    Check AI visibility

See whether AI crawlers are allowed in and whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity name you for buyer questions.

  8. 8

    Prioritise and schedule

Sort findings by impact, assign an owner to each and schedule the next audit so you can see whether fixes moved the numbers.

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK

Frequently asked questions

Still unsure? Email support@digimetrics.ai and a person will reply.

How do I do an SEO audit myself?

Follow the eight steps above in order: confirm indexing, crawl for technical issues, test speed, review on-page elements on key pages, check backlinks, check structured data and local signals, check AI visibility, then prioritise. Search Console covers step one for free; a tool such as Full Site Audit covers most of the rest in one run.

How long does an SEO audit take?

A manual audit of a small site usually takes a few hours because each check needs its own tool. Full Site Audit takes 1 to 3.5 minutes for the automated checks, which leaves your time for the on-page comparisons and decisions.

How soon will fixes show up in Google?

Google says some changes take effect in a few hours and others can take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging whether a change helped. Schedule a re-audit rather than checking daily.

Should an SEO audit checklist include AI search in 2026?

Yes. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode rely on the same SEO fundamentals, so a sound audit already covers most of it. Other assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity are worth checking separately, which is why the last layer checks AI crawler access and brand mentions.

Do I need an llms.txt file to pass an audit?

Not for Google: Google says Google Search ignores llms.txt and it will neither help nor harm rankings. Some other AI services may read it, so treat it as optional housekeeping rather than a ranking fix.

Is there a free SEO audit checklist template?

Yes: copy the checklist table on this page into a spreadsheet and add owner and status columns. To fill it in automatically, new Digimetrics accounts can run a Full Site Audit free for 7 days with no card.
