The short answer

  • Google ranks local results mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and you cannot pay for a better local ranking.
  • A verified Google Business Profile with complete, accurate details is the single most important local asset.
  • More reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking; offering incentives for reviews is prohibited.
  • Your business name, address and phone should match exactly across your website and your Business Profile.
  • LocalBusiness structured data and a page per service area help Google connect your site to local searches.

Local SEO guide basics: how does Google decide local rankings?

Google's Business Profile help says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence. You control relevance and prominence; distance depends on where the searcher is.

Relevance is how well your profile matches the search, which is why complete, detailed business information matters. Distance is how far you are from the searcher, or from the location they searched. Prominence is how well known you are, which Google says is based on information such as how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have.

Google is also clear about one thing that many agencies blur: there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Ads can appear above the map, but they do not change the organic order.

FactorWhat Google looks atWhat you can do
RelevanceHow well your profile and site match the searchAccurate categories, full details, service pages that match real searches
DistanceHow far you are from the searcher or searched locationAccurate address or service area; you cannot move closer
ProminenceHow well known you are: links, reviews, ratingsEarn reviews, local links and mentions; keep the profile active

Google Business Profile optimization: the checklist

Verify the profile, represent your business exactly as it appears in the real world, keep hours and details up to date, add photos, and respond to reviews. Accuracy beats keyword tricks.

Google's guidelines are strict about names: your business name should match your real-world name on signage and stationery, and adding unnecessary keywords to it is not permitted and can lead to suspension. There should be one profile per business. Service-area businesses that visit customers, such as plumbers or cleaners, list a service area rather than a storefront address; P.O. boxes are not acceptable.

  • Verify the profile so Google knows you are authorised to represent the business.
  • Name exactly as on your sign, with no taglines, cities or keywords added.
  • Categories: the fewest that describe your core business.
  • Address or service area: accurate and precise; one profile per business.
  • Hours, including special hours for holidays.
  • Attributes such as parking, accessibility or Wi-Fi where relevant.
  • Description of services, products, mission and history, honest and specific.
  • Photos and videos that show the real premises, team and work.
  • Products for eligible retail businesses, so in-store stock can appear in local results.

Google's generative AI guidance also tells site owners to keep Business Profile information up to date, because AI responses can include local business information.

Reviews: how to get more without breaking the rules

Ask every satisfied customer with a direct Google review link or QR code, reply to reviews, and never offer anything in return for a review. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking.

Google's review guidance makes the line clear: offering incentives such as free or discounted goods in exchange for posting, changing or removing reviews is considered fake and misleading content and is strictly prohibited. Customers need to be signed in to a Google Account to leave a review.

Replies matter too. Google suggests short, professional, conversational replies, focusing on reviews where you can add something useful, and never sharing a reviewer's private information. A balanced mix of positive and negative reviews often feels more trustworthy than a wall of five stars.

Timing helps: ask at the moment the job is done and the customer is happiest, such as when the invoice is paid or the appointment ends.

Your website's local SEO checklist

Your site should show consistent name, address and phone details, embed a map, list service areas, carry LocalBusiness structured data and load fast on a phone. These are exactly what Local SEO Check tests.

Local SEO Check reads your home or contact page and reports on five signals in 20 seconds to 1.5 minutes. Add your name, address and phone as they appear on your Business Profile and it also checks they match.

Local pages and schema markup for local SEO

Create one genuinely useful page per core service and per main area served, and add LocalBusiness structured data so Google can read your hours, address and contact details directly.

Google's LocalBusiness documentation says this markup can tell Google about business hours, departments, reviews and more, and that the knowledge panel and local carousels can show those details. Validate the code with the Rich Results Test before publishing, and keep it matching what the page shows.

For area pages, avoid copying one page and swapping the town name: Google's spam policies treat scaled, low-value pages as abuse. Instead include what is genuinely local: the jobs you have done there, local regulations, travel times, photos and reviews from customers in that area. Trades from plumbers to dentists have their own guides on the site with examples of the searches that matter.

The full how-to for markup, including which types to use, is in our schema markup guide.

How to measure local SEO results

Track three things: rankings for your key searches in each city you serve, calls, direction requests and website clicks from your Business Profile, and enquiries from organic search on your site.

Rankings are local, so check them where your customers are. Rank Checker takes a country with an optional city and mobile setting and shows position and change since the last check. Business Profile's own performance insights show how people interact with your listing. Search Console shows the searches that bring people to your website, free to connect inside Digimetrics.

Increasingly, people also ask AI assistants for recommendations such as the best emergency plumber nearby. The AI Mentions Tracker asks GPT-4o, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overview your buyer questions and reports how often you are named.

HOW IT WORKS

How to do local SEO in six steps

  1. 1

Verify and complete your Google Business Profile

Claim and verify the profile, choose the fewest categories that describe your core business, and fill in address or service area, hours and attributes.

  2. 2

Make your website match the profile

Show the same business name, address and phone on your contact page and footer. Local SEO Check confirms Google can read them and that they match.

  3. 3

Build steady reviews and reply to them

Ask every happy customer with a Google review link or QR code, and reply to reviews, including negative ones, briefly and politely.

  4. 4

Create a page for each service and area

Write one useful page per core service, and per area you serve, with real local detail rather than swapped town names.

  5. 5

    Add LocalBusiness schema

Generate valid JSON-LD with the Schema Generator and paste it into your contact or home page.

  6. 6

Track local rankings and fix speed on mobile

Check your positions by city with the Rank Checker and test mobile speed with the page speed test.

What is the most important local SEO factor?

Google names relevance, distance and prominence as the main factors. In practice, the most important thing you control is a verified, complete and accurate Google Business Profile, followed by reviews.

Can I pay Google to rank higher in local results?

No. Google states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Local search ads can appear above the map, but they do not change the organic local results.

Should I put keywords in my Google Business Profile name?

No. Google's guidelines say the name should match your real-world business name, and adding unnecessary information can lead to suspension of the profile.

Do I need a physical address for local SEO?

No. Businesses that travel to customers can set a service area instead of a public address. Google does not accept P.O. boxes or remote mailboxes as a location.

How long does local SEO take to work?

Profile updates can show within days, but reviews, links and local pages build over months. Google's general guidance is to wait a few weeks before judging whether a change helped.

Is local SEO different for dentists, HVAC companies and other trades?

The fundamentals are the same: profile, reviews, consistent details, service pages and schema. What changes is the searches, categories and compliance rules, such as health advertising rules for clinics or licensing details for trades.
