SEO for web designers: launch sites that get found, not just admired
SEO for web designers means building sites that search engines and AI assistants can crawl, read and load fast, so the client is found after launch. Digimetrics checks it with Technical SEO Crawler for missing tags, Page Speed Check for Google's Core Web Vitals, and Website UAT Audit for broken links, SSL and security headers before go-live. The short answer
- Clients judge a new site by whether it brings enquiries, and the build decides much of that: structure, speed, tags and crawlability.
- Technical SEO Crawler lists each issue with the number of pages affected and a severity, so template problems show up as one fix.
- Page Speed Check returns Google's 0-100 performance score, Largest Contentful Paint, layout shift and interaction, with fixes ordered by time saved.
- Website UAT Audit checks broken links, headings, images, SSL, security headers and email records in one pre-launch pass.
- A redesign that drops rankings is the most common post-launch complaint; a pre-launch crawl prevents most of it.
Do web designers need to know SEO?
You need to know the part that lives in the build: site structure, headings, page speed, metadata fields, redirects and structured data. Keyword strategy and content can sit with someone else.
Clients rarely separate design from results. If the new site launches and enquiries fall, the call comes to you, not to whoever wrote the copy. The good news is that the technical side of SEO overlaps heavily with good development practice: semantic HTML, fast pages, accessible images, clean URLs.
Is SEO part of web design? Not by default, and it is worth being clear in your proposals about what is included. A sensible line: you deliver a site that is technically ready to rank and passes a crawl and speed check at launch; ongoing SEO is a separate service or a partner's job.
Website launch SEO: the checks that prevent a post-launch drop
Map old URLs to new ones with redirects, keep titles and descriptions on every page, check that robots settings let search engines in, and confirm speed on mobile. Most ranking drops after a redesign come from missing one of these.
The table shows the common launch mistakes and which Digimetrics tool catches each one. For the full list, use our technical SEO checklist.
| Launch mistake | What happens | Tool that catches it |
|---|---|---|
| Staging noindex left on | Google drops the site | Google Crawler Simulator |
| Old URLs not redirected | Links and rankings lost | Technical SEO Crawler and Website UAT Audit (broken links) |
| Titles or descriptions blank on templates | Weak, auto-written results | Technical SEO Crawler |
| Hero images too heavy | Slow Largest Contentful Paint | Page Speed Check |
| Layout jumps as fonts and ads load | Poor layout shift score | Page Speed Check |
| Images missing alt text | Lost image search and accessibility | Google Crawler Simulator |
| Expired or missing SSL | Browser warnings | Website UAT Audit |
In the official tutorial's sample (fictional brand Brightpath), the crawl found missing meta descriptions on 6 of 10 pages: a one-template fix that would otherwise have shipped to every page.
Best web design for SEO: what the build should get right
The best web design for SEO is fast, structured and readable: one H1 per page, a logical heading outline, real text instead of text in images, and a light page on mobile.
Design choices that look harmless can hurt. Text baked into hero images is invisible to Google and AI assistants. Sliders delay the main content. Single-page sites squeeze every service onto one URL that can only rank for one thing. Tabs and accordions are fine as long as the text is in the HTML.
The Googlebot simulator shows the page as Google reads it: title, description, canonical, headings, the indexed words, every link with its status and every image with its alt text. It is the fastest way to show a client why the beautiful hero needs a real heading. See also core web vitals in our glossary.
How can web designers and developers get recommended by ChatGPT and AI Overviews?
For your own studio: a portfolio with clear text about who you build for and with what, plus an llms.txt file. For client sites: add structured data and make sure AI crawlers are not blocked.
Many site templates and security plugins block AI bots by default. That might be what a client wants, but it should be a decision, not an accident. The AI Readiness Check checks llms.txt, AI-bot access and structured data; the Schema Generator writes Organization, LocalBusiness, Product and other JSON-LD for you to paste in. Read should you block GPTBot to advise clients properly.
Adding an SEO check to your web design packages
A pre-launch crawl, speed report and launch checklist make a clean, billable deliverable, and they protect you if rankings move after go-live.
Hand the client a short report at launch: crawl results, speed scores and the launch checklist cleared. If anything changes later, you have a dated record of the state you delivered. On the Expert plan ($159 a month billed annually) you can export those reports as white-label PDFs under your studio's brand.

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK
Frequently asked questions
Still unsure? Email support@digimetrics.ai and a person will reply.
What is the best SEO tool for web designers and developers?
One that checks what the build controls: crawlability, tags, speed and launch hygiene. Digimetrics covers it with Technical SEO Crawler, Page Speed Check, Website UAT Audit and Google Crawler Simulator, without the keyword and content tools getting in your way.
Does web design include SEO?
Technical readiness should be included: structure, speed, metadata fields, redirects and indexability. Ongoing keyword research, content and link building are usually separate services. Spell out which you offer in the proposal.
What SEO should a web designer do first on a redesign?
Export the old site's URLs before you touch anything and plan a redirect for each. Then crawl the new build before launch and fix high-severity issues.
Can I check a staging site?
If the staging URL is publicly reachable, yes: the tools analyse any page they can load. Password-protected staging needs to be opened temporarily for the check.
How do I explain SEO problems to a client who loves the design?
Show them the page as Google sees it. The Googlebot simulator lists the indexed words and headings, which makes text-in-images and missing headings obvious without jargon.
How much should a web design studio spend on SEO tools?
A launch check needs only a crawl and a speed test. Starter at $31 a month billed annually covers several launches; Expert adds white-label PDFs.
