WHY YOU ARE NOT RANKING
Why is my website not ranking on Google?
A website not ranking on Google usually has one of three problems: it is not indexed, it targets searches it cannot win yet, or its pages are weaker than those already ranking. Diagnose in that order. Digimetrics SEO Diagnostics checks health, keyword verdicts and who ranks above you in 1 to 3.5 minutes, with a plan in priority order.

The short answer
- First check whether Google has indexed you at all: search site:yourdomain.com. No results means an indexing problem, not a ranking problem.
- Google's technical minimum: Googlebot not blocked, HTTP 200 status and indexable content. Indexing still is not automatic.
- New sites often rank for nothing because they target keywords dominated by far stronger domains.
- If you rank but not on page one, compare your page with the top three results: the gap is usually intent or depth.
- If rankings dropped suddenly, check Search Console for the date and pattern before changing anything.
Why is my website not showing on Google search at all?
If a site: search returns nothing, Google has not indexed your pages. The usual causes are a brand-new site, a noindex tag left over from development, a robots.txt block, a login wall or server errors.
Google's technical requirements are short: Googlebot is not blocked, the page returns HTTP 200, and the page has indexable content. Google adds that meeting them does not mean a page will be indexed. Most sites are found automatically through links, but a new site with no links pointing at it may simply not have been discovered yet.
Google's recrawl help says crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, and requesting a crawl does not promise inclusion. Submit a sitemap for many URLs, or use the URL Inspection tool for a few. Requesting the same URL repeatedly does not speed it up.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| site: search shows nothing, site is new | Not discovered yet | Verify in Search Console, submit a sitemap, get a few genuine links |
| site: shows nothing, site is not new | noindex tag or robots.txt block, often left from staging | Remove the tag or rule, then request indexing |
| Some pages missing | Duplicates, soft 404s, thin or orphan pages | Check Search Console's Page indexing report for the reason |
| URL shows without a description | Page blocked by robots.txt but linked from elsewhere | Remove the robots.txt rule |
| Pages disappear after a redesign | New templates added noindex or changed URLs without redirects | Restore indexability, add 301 redirects from old URLs |
Why is my website indexed but not ranking?
Indexed but invisible usually means you are targeting searches where stronger, more complete pages already rank, or your page does not match what the searcher wants.
There are nine common causes. Work through them in order, because the early ones make the later ones irrelevant:
- Keywords too competitive for your domain's authority today.
- Wrong intent: a sales page competing against guides, or the reverse.
- Thin content compared with the top results.
- Weak title and opening that do not say clearly what the page is about.
- Cannibalisation: several of your pages compete for the same search and split the clicks.
- Few or no backlinks from relevant sites.
- Poor internal linking, so important pages are buried.
- Slow or unstable pages on mobile, the version Google indexes.
- Very new site that has not yet built any track record.
Cannibalisation is easy to miss. In the official Search Console tutorial's sample, one search was shown 61,300 times with a 3.5% click rate, split across three competing pages.
What keywords does my website rank for?
Search Console's Performance report lists the searches where your site appeared, with clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position. It is free and comes from Google.
Sort by impressions and look at average position. Queries in positions 11 to 20 are on page two: close enough that an improved page can move them. In the official tutorial's sample (fictional brand Brightpath), Page Technical & Domain Analysis found 186 keywords on page two, where the quickest gains are.
If you want positions for specific keywords in a particular city or on mobile, the Rank Checker checks Google, Bing or Yahoo in 30 seconds to 2.5 minutes. In its tutorial sample, "performance improvement plan" moved up 31 places to position 12, two spots off page one.
How long does it take for a website to rank on Google?
It depends on competition and your site's authority. Google says some changes show in hours and others take months. For a specific keyword, a time-to-rank forecast gives a realistic range.
Avoid anyone who gives a fixed number for every site. A low-difficulty keyword on an established site can move within weeks; a competitive keyword on a new domain may take far longer. Time to Rank weighs your domain authority against each keyword's difficulty. In the official tutorial's sample, "work management" had difficulty 21 with a forecast of page one in 2 to 3 months.
Use the forecast to order your content plan: publish for the keywords you can win soonest first, and build authority for the harder ones in parallel.
| Situation | What usually happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| New site, competitive keywords | Indexed, but nowhere near page one | Target specific, lower-difficulty searches first |
| Established site, new page, easy keyword | Can move within weeks of indexing | Link to it from related pages |
| Page on page two | Small improvements can move it | Benchmark against the top three and close gaps |
| After a big site change | Some changes take effect in days, others months | Wait a few weeks before judging, then re-check |
My rankings dropped suddenly. What happened?
Find the date and the pattern first. A sharp, site-wide drop points to a technical issue, a security or spam issue, or a ranking update. A gradual decline points to competition or changing demand.
Google's traffic-drop guide separates small drops (for example, position 2 to 4, which can reverse on its own) from large drops (falling out of the top 10 across many terms, which calls for a site-wide quality review). It recommends avoiding radical changes to pages that already perform well, and checking seasonality with Google Trends.
SEO Diagnostics was built for this question. In the official tutorial's sample, it scored health at 74 with two critical issues and found one page had dropped four places after a redesign and lost 22% of impressions: the cause was the redesign, not an algorithm.
- Check the date in Search Console against your own changes: releases, migrations, redesigns.
- Check the scope: one page, one section or the whole site?
- Check Search Console messages for manual actions or security issues.
- Check seasonality in Google Trends before assuming a penalty.
- Check who replaced you on page one, and what their page does better.
What tools help when a website is not ranking on Google?
Search Console tells you what Google sees. A crawler finds what blocks it. A diagnostics tool compares you with who ranks above you and turns it into a plan.
If you only run one check, run SEO Diagnostics: it combines health, keyword verdicts such as low-hanging fruit or declining, live competitors and a technical pass in one plan. For a broader health score that also covers AI visibility, the SEO audit checklist explains what Full Site Audit adds. And if traffic is fine but sales are not, the problem may be on the page itself: try the Landing Page Audit.

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK
Frequently asked questions
Still unsure? Email support@digimetrics.ai and a person will reply.
Why is my website not showing on Google when I search its name?
If even your brand name does not bring up your site, Google probably has not indexed it. Check with a site: search, look for a noindex tag or robots.txt block, verify the site in Search Console and submit a sitemap.
How do I connect Google Search Console to my website?
Add your site as a property in Search Console and verify ownership, for example with a DNS record or an HTML tag. Then connect it to Digimetrics once, read-only, to see the data in plain English. Connecting is free and read-only.
How does Google see my website?
Use the URL Inspection tool in Search Console to see the HTML Googlebot received and whether the page is indexed. The Google Crawler Simulator shows the title, headings, indexed words, links and images as Google reads them.
Can I pay Google to rank higher?
No. Ads appear in labelled ad slots, but no payment changes organic rankings. Google also states it costs nothing to get a page into search results.
Why is my website getting traffic but no sales?
That is usually a page problem rather than a ranking one: unclear offer, slow load or missing trust signals. The Landing Page Audit scores clarity, speed and trust in under 1.5 minutes.
Does AI search affect whether my site ranks?
Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode use the same index and fundamentals, so fixing the issues above helps there too. Other assistants such as ChatGPT can be checked separately; see how to measure AI visibility.
