The short answer
- SEO Diagnostics looks at rankings, competitors and technical health together, because a ranking problem rarely has one cause.
- Each search you enter gets a verdict, such as low-hanging fruit or declining.
- It reads who ranks above you live from Google, so you see the pages you are up against.
- Optional Analytics or Search Console numbers sharpen the diagnosis.
- A diagnosis takes 1 to 3.5 minutes, and the 7-day free trial covers your first one.

Why is my website not ranking on Google? The five usual causes
Most sites that do not rank have one of five problems: Google cannot index the page, the page does not match what searchers want, stronger sites hold the top spots, the site lacks authority, or a recent change broke something.
SEO Diagnostics is built around this list. Each cause maps to a part of the report, so you see which one applies to you instead of working through generic advice.
| Cause | Typical sign | Where the diagnosis shows it |
|---|---|---|
| Indexing or technical fault | Page missing from Google entirely | Technical audit: pass or fix per check |
| Wrong intent or thin page | Ranks on page three or lower | Keyword verdict for that search |
| Stronger competitors | Same rivals in the top spots every time | Who ranks above you, read live |
| Low authority | Easier searches rank, harder ones do not | Health score and keyword verdicts |
| Recent change | Drop after a redesign or migration | Declining verdict, plus your Search Console numbers |
Why did my rankings drop?
A sudden drop usually follows a change on your site or a stronger page appearing above you. A slow slide usually means competitors improved while your page stood still.
In the official tutorial's sample (fictional brand Brightpath), the site scored a health of 74 with two critical issues, and one page had dropped four places after a redesign, losing 22% of its impressions. That is the classic pattern: the content was fine, but the redesign changed something Google relied on.
SEO Diagnostics flags searches like that as declining, then puts the fix at the top of the plan. To confirm the drop in your own data, connect Search Console (free and read-only) and compare the periods before and after the change.
Website traffic dropped suddenly? Check the date against your last deploy, redesign or migration before anything else.
Why is my page not ranking when the rest of the site is?
When one page lags, the cause is usually on that page: it targets the wrong intent, it is thinner than the pages above it, or another page on your site competes for the same search.
Look at who ranks above you in the diagnosis and open those pages. If they are guides and yours is a sales page, the intent is wrong. If they are twice as detailed, the page is thin; On-Page Optimisation benchmarks it against the top three results and writes the fix. If two of your own pages target the same phrase, decide which one owns it with Keyword Mapping.
Finding out why your site is not ranking without an expensive SEO subscription
One diagnosis takes 1 to 3.5 minutes, and new accounts get every tool free for 7 days with no card.
Doing the same checks by hand means a crawler, a rank tracker, manual searches for every keyword and a spreadsheet to connect the dots. Big suites like Semrush and Ahrefs hold all that data, but you still have to work out the diagnosis yourself.
SEO Diagnostics gives you the conclusion first: a verdict per search and a plan in order. Read our guide on why websites do not rank for the full manual method.
Who uses SEO Diagnostics, and what to run next
Business owners use it when the phone stops ringing; freelancers and agencies use it when a client asks why rankings fell.
Business owners get a plain answer they can hand to a developer. Consultants get evidence for the first client call.
After the diagnosis, three tools go deeper:
- Technical SEO Crawler: every page checked for broken tags and metadata.
- Rank Checker: track the searches you fixed each week.
- Competitors Identifier: compare every keyword you share with up to 3 rivals.
Digimetrics doesn't just flag SEO problems. It explains what's wrong and how to fix it. I'm saving hours on audits and getting clearer, more actionable insights without jumping between multiple tools.

Why is my website not ranking on Google?
Usually one of five reasons: an indexing or technical fault, a page that does not match search intent, stronger competitors, low authority, or a recent change. SEO Diagnostics checks all of them in one run and tells you which applies.
What is the best tool to find out why my website is not ranking in 2026?
One that connects rankings, competitors and technical health and ends in a plan. SEO Diagnostics does that in 1 to 3.5 minutes.
Is there a free way to diagnose SEO problems?
Yes, to start. New Digimetrics accounts get every tool for 7 days with no card, enough for several diagnoses. Your own Search Console data is free to connect.
What does a low-hanging fruit verdict mean?
The search is close to page one and should move with modest work, usually on-page improvements. Fix these before chasing harder searches.
Do I need to connect Google Analytics or Search Console?
No, but it helps. You can type in your Analytics or Search Console numbers as optional inputs to sharpen the diagnosis.
My website is not ranking at all. Is it even indexed?
Search Google for site: followed by your domain. If nothing appears, Google has not indexed the site, and the technical audit in SEO Diagnostics will usually show why, for example pages blocked from crawling. If pages appear but rank nowhere, the cause is more likely intent, content or competition.
How long does it take to recover rankings after a fix?
It varies by site and search. Re-run SEO Diagnostics and track the affected searches with Rank Checker to see when positions return.
