SEO GLOSSARY

What is share of voice?

Share of voice (SOV) is your brand's portion of the total visibility in a market, compared with competitors. It matters because it shows whether you are gaining or losing attention, in ads, search results or AI answers, before that shows up in sales.

What is share of voice in marketing?

Share of voice began as an advertising measure: your ad spend divided by total ad spend in your category. Digital marketing now applies the same ratio to search rankings, social mentions and AI answers.

The classic example: if an electronics brand spends $5,000,000 advertising its e-reader in a category where $100,000,000 is spent in total, it has a 5% share of voice. The logic carries over to any channel where attention is limited.

How to measure AI share of voice, with an example

Ask AI assistants the questions your buyers ask, count how many answers name you, and compare with competitors. Digimetrics AI Mentions Tracker does this across GPT-4o, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overview.

The AI mentions tracker takes your brand, website and up to 10 buyer questions, and returns mention rate, sentiment, citation rate, position and the sources each answer cited. A run takes 2 to 5 minutes.

In the official tutorial's sample (fictional brand Brightpath), 12 of 15 answers named the brand (80%), but one question averaged only 38% visibility: that question was the gap to close. Our guide on how to measure AI visibility explains how to pick the right questions.

How to increase share of voice

Grow where the gap is largest: the keywords, questions or channels where competitors are named and you are not.

  • Search: target keywords where rivals rank and you do not, found with competitor analysis.
  • AI answers: publish clear, quotable answers and earn mentions on the sources AI tools cite.
  • Social and PR: track conversation volume and sentiment with social listening.
  • Paid: increase spend only where it is efficient; SOV bought at any price is not a win.
