MEASURE AI VISIBILITY
AI visibility metrics: how to measure your brand in AI answers
AI visibility metrics show how AI assistants represent your brand: mention rate, citation rate, sentiment, position in the answer, share of voice and cited sources. Measure them by asking the same buyer questions across engines on a schedule. Digimetrics AI Mentions Tracker checks five engines in 2 to 5 minutes, with up to 10 buyer questions per run.

The short answer
- Six AI visibility metrics cover most needs: mention rate, citation rate, sentiment, position, share of voice and cited sources.
- Measure with real buyer questions, not your brand name: "best X for Y" is where recommendations happen.
- AI answers vary from run to run, so track trends across several questions and dates, not a single answer.
- For Google's own AI features, Search Console now has a Generative AI performance report; other assistants need a tracker.
- Pair outside-in metrics (are we named?) with inside-out checks (can AI crawlers read our site?).
What are AI visibility metrics?
AI visibility metrics are measurements of your brand's presence in answers generated by assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. They replace rank position, which does not exist in a conversational answer.
Classic SEO has a clean scoreboard: position 1 to 100 for a keyword. An AI answer has no fixed positions. It may name you first, last, not at all, or link to your site without naming you. So AI search visibility metrics measure presence, prominence, accuracy and attribution instead.
The terms are still settling. You will see "AI visibility", "LLM visibility", "generative engine visibility" and "AI share of voice" used for overlapping ideas. What matters is that each metric answers a business question. Our explainers on GEO and AEO cover the disciplines behind them.
The six AI visibility metrics and KPIs to track
Track mention rate, citation rate, sentiment, position, share of voice and cited sources. The first is your headline KPI; the others explain why it moves.
In the official tutorial's sample (fictional brand Brightpath), AI Mentions Tracker found 12 of 15 answers named the brand (80%), while one question averaged 38% visibility: that single weak question was the gap to close. A headline number hides that, which is why you report per question as well as overall.
| Metric | Question it answers | How it is calculated | What moves it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mention rate | How often do AI answers name us? | Answers naming you divided by answers checked | Being cited by sources AI trusts, clear category pages |
| Citation rate | How often do they link to our site? | Answers linking your domain divided by answers checked | Crawlable, specific pages that state facts plainly |
| Sentiment | Do they speak well of us? | Positive, neutral or negative per mention | Reviews, press, accurate product information |
| Position | How early are we named? | Order of first mention within the answer | Strength of evidence for your fit with the question |
| Share of voice | How do we compare with rivals? | Your mentions divided by all brand mentions | Closing gaps on questions rivals win |
| Sources | Which sites shape the answer? | Domains cited in the answers | Earning coverage on those sites |
Share of voice works the same way as in classic marketing. See our glossary entry on share of voice.
How to measure brand visibility in LLMs reliably
Use a fixed set of buyer questions, run them across several engines, repeat on a schedule and report trends. One screenshot of one answer is an anecdote, not a measurement.
Generated answers vary with the wording of the question, the engine, the model version and, for some engines, live web results. That variability is the main reason manual spot checks mislead: you can ask ChatGPT once, see your brand, and conclude all is well.
Three habits make the numbers trustworthy:
- Keep the question set fixed between runs, and add new questions as a separate group.
- Spread across engines: buyers use different assistants, and each draws on different sources.
- Look at the weakest question, not only the average. In the sample above, the 38% question was where the work was.
- Record the sources cited: if the same review site or directory keeps appearing, that is where to earn coverage.
- Compare like with like: same market, same language, same questions.
Measuring visibility in Google AI Overviews with Search Console
Google reports AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside Search Console's Performance report under the Web search type, and its AI guidance points to a Generative AI performance report for these features.
That makes Search Console the first place to look for Google's own AI features, and it is free. Google also says clicks from search results pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, with visitors more likely to spend more time on the site. Connect it to Digimetrics, free and read-only, through the Search Console integration.
What Search Console cannot tell you is what ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity say about you, or which rivals they recommend instead. Google itself warns against third-party tools that claim access to its internal metrics: no outside tool has that. An AI mentions tracker measures something different and observable: the answers buyers actually see.
| Source of data | Covers | Does not cover |
|---|---|---|
| Search Console Performance report | Clicks and impressions including AI Overviews and AI Mode | Other assistants; whether you were named |
| Google Analytics | Visits and conversions from AI referrals | Answers that did not produce a click |
| AI Mentions Tracker | Mention rate, citations, sentiment, position and sources across five engines | Google's internal ranking data |
AI visibility factors: what you can actually change
AI assistants can only describe you from what they can read and trust. You can change whether AI crawlers can access your site, how clearly your pages state facts, and how widely trusted sources mention you.
Start with access. OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and Perplexity says PerplexityBot is used to surface and link sites in its results. Blocking these bots can remove you from those answers. Our guide on AI crawlers explains which to allow.
Then clarity. Pages that state plainly what you do, who it is for, prices and comparisons are easier to quote. AI Page Rewrite adds a one-sentence answer, a comparison table and an FAQ block to a page. For Google specifically, its guidance is that AI features rest on the same SEO fundamentals and that llms.txt is not used by Google Search.
- Access: allow the search bots of the assistants you care about in robots.txt.
- Clarity: specific facts in text on the page, not hidden in images or scripts.
- Corroboration: mentions on the sources that AI answers already cite for your category.
- Consistency: the same name, description and facts across your site, profiles and listings.
What tools help with AI visibility metrics?
You need one tool that asks the engines and scores the answers, one that checks whether AI can read your site, and Search Console for Google's AI features.
All three are available on the Digimetrics free plan. If you report to clients or leadership, the SEO reporting guide shows how to add AI visibility to a monthly report.
| Job | Digimetrics tool | Output | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mention rate, citations, sentiment, position, sources | AI Mentions Tracker | Up to 10 buyer questions across 5 engines | 2 to 5 minutes |
| Can AI bots read the site? | AI Readiness Check | llms.txt, AI bot access and structured data | up to a minute |
| Whole-site score including GEO fixes | Full Site Audit (SEO + AI) | Health score out of 100 | 1 to 3.5 minutes |
| Google search and AI Overview traffic | Search Console integration | Free, read-only connection | loads on its own |
HOW IT WORKS
How to measure AI visibility in six steps
- 1
Write your buyer questions
List 3 to 10 questions a customer would ask before buying, such as "best accounting software for freelancers". Avoid questions that already contain your brand name.
- 2
Pick the engines
Cover the assistants your buyers use. The AI Mentions Tracker asks GPT-4o, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overview in one run.
- 3
Run a baseline
Record mention rate, citation rate, sentiment, position and sources for every question. This is your starting point.
- 4
Name your competitors
Note which brands appear instead of you. That gives you share of voice and a list of rivals to study.
- 5
Check readability for AI
Run the AI Readiness Check to confirm AI bots are allowed in and structured data and llms.txt are in place.
- 6
Re-measure on a schedule
Repeat monthly with the same questions so changes reflect your work, not a different test.
QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK
Frequently asked questions
Still unsure? Email support@digimetrics.ai and a person will reply.
What is a good AI mention rate?
There is no universal benchmark yet, and it depends heavily on your category and questions. Treat your first run as the baseline and aim to raise it over time, focusing on the questions where you score lowest.
What is AI share of voice?
Your share of all brand mentions in AI answers for a set of questions. If answers name you 4 times and competitors 12 times, your share of voice is 25%. It shows whether you are gaining on rivals, not just whether you appear.
How often should I measure AI visibility?
Monthly suits most brands, with an extra run after a launch, a major PR moment or big site changes. Keep the question set fixed between runs so changes are comparable.
Can I test AI visibility manually?
You can ask ChatGPT or Perplexity yourself, but results vary between runs and engines, and logging mention, citation, sentiment and position by hand takes a long time. A tracker runs the same questions across five engines and scores them in minutes.
Do I need an AI search visibility consultant?
Not to measure. The metrics above can be tracked in-house with a tracker. A specialist can help with the fixes, such as content and PR, if you lack the people; ask them which metrics they report and how they control for answer variability.
Does ranking on Google improve AI visibility?
For Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says the same SEO fundamentals apply. For other assistants, being crawlable and widely cited helps. Strong SEO is a good foundation, but measure AI answers directly rather than assuming.
