AI SEO CHECKLIST
The AI SEO checklist: 20 checks for Google and AI search
This AI SEO checklist covers the 20 checks that decide whether Google and AI assistants can find, read, trust and cite your site. They run in four stages: access (crawlers and firewalls), foundation (indexing, speed, structured data), content (answer-first pages with evidence) and measurement (AI mentions). Each check names the Digimetrics tool that tests it.

The short answer
- Work the checklist in order: there is no point rewriting content for AI if AI crawlers are blocked at your firewall.
- Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode have no extra technical requirements beyond being indexed and snippet-eligible, so stages 1 and 2 serve Google and AI at once.
- ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude each run their own search crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot), so check them by name.
- Content checks focus on direct answers, specifics and cited sources, the edits that research found raise visibility in AI answers.
- Finish by measuring: ask AI engines your buyers' questions and record whether they name you, then repeat monthly.
AI SEO checklist stage 1: access (can AI crawlers reach you?)
Access comes first because a blocked crawler makes every other fix invisible. Check robots.txt, your CDN or firewall, and the specific search bots each AI company documents.
AI companies separate their crawlers by purpose. Search bots decide whether you can appear in answers; training bots decide whether your content may train future models. You can allow the first and block the second. Our AI crawlers guide lists every user agent.
| # | Check | Why it matters | How to test |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Googlebot allowed in robots.txt | Google says robots.txt rules for Googlebot control crawling for Search, including AI features | AI Readiness Check; Google Crawler Simulator |
| 2 | OAI-SearchBot allowed | OpenAI says sites opted out will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers | AI Readiness Check (AI bots) |
| 3 | PerplexityBot allowed | It surfaces and links sites in Perplexity results | AI Readiness Check (AI bots) |
| 4 | Claude-SearchBot allowed | Anthropic says disabling it may reduce visibility in Claude's search results | Read robots.txt for the token |
| 5 | CDN and firewall let these bots through | Google lists CDN and hosting blocks as a crawl problem; Perplexity publishes WAF allow rules | Check bot settings and server logs |
| 6 | Training bots set by choice, not accident | GPTBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended govern training use, separately from search | Decide policy, then confirm in robots.txt |
Stage 2: Foundation checks (can search engines index and trust the page?)
AI answers on Google are grounded in pages from its Search index, and ChatGPT search queries search providers, so classic technical SEO is the foundation of AI visibility.
Google states that to be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Its list of best practices for AI features reads like a technical SEO checklist: internal links, page experience, content in text form, and structured data that matches the page. Our technical SEO checklist goes deeper on each.
| # | Check | Why it matters | Digimetrics tool |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | Key pages indexed, no stray noindex or nosnippet | Required for Google's AI features | Technical SEO Crawler |
| 8 | Important content is in HTML text, not only images or scripts | Google recommends key content be available as text | Google Crawler Simulator (indexed words) |
| 9 | Key pages linked internally | Google lists internal links as a best practice for AI features | Technical SEO Crawler |
| 10 | Pages load fast and stay stable | Page experience is on Google's list | Page Speed Check |
| 11 | Organization (or LocalBusiness, Product) structured data, matching visible text | Helps machines identify who you are; must match the page | Schema Generator |
| 12 | Business Profile and Merchant Center up to date | Google says AI responses can include local and product details | Local SEO Check |
In the official tutorial's sample (fictional brand Brightpath), the Full Site Audit scored 82/100 and the one critical fix was adding llms.txt and organization structured data: both foundation items that classic checklists often skip.
Stage 3: Content checks (is the page worth quoting?)
Content checks ask whether a retrieved page contains a clear, specific, well-sourced answer an AI can lift. This is where most sites fall short.
The GEO research paper (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024) tested nine ways of editing pages. Adding citations, quotations and statistics gave the largest gains, 30 to 40% in visibility on its benchmark, while keyword stuffing did little. Google's guidance points the same way from a different angle: create unique, non-commodity content with a first-hand point of view, rather than restating what is already online.
| # | Check | Pass looks like | Digimetrics tool |
|---|---|---|---|
| 13 | Each key page answers one main question in its first 40 to 60 words | A self-contained answer that names your brand and the specifics | AI Page Rewrite |
| 14 | Vague claims replaced with specifics | Prices, limits, features, locations in place of adjectives | AI Page Rewrite |
| 15 | Comparisons in a table | A table buyers and AI can read row by row | AI Page Rewrite |
| 16 | FAQ block for buying questions | Visible questions and answers, marked up to match | AI Page Rewrite; Schema Generator |
| 17 | Facts carry sources and first-hand evidence | Linked sources, data you can show, real examples | Content Checker flags unprovable claims |
| 18 | llms.txt points AI agents to your best pages | A short, current file at your root (not used by Google Search) | llms.txt Generator |
Stage 4: Measurement checks (are AI engines naming you?)
Measure AI visibility directly: ask the engines your buyers' questions and record mentions, citations and sources. Rankings alone do not tell you this.
Two checks close the loop:
19. Baseline your AI mention rate. Pick 3 to 10 questions buyers actually ask. The AI Mentions Tracker asks them across GPT-4o, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overview and reports mention rate, sentiment, citation rate, position and sources (2 to 5 minutes). In the official tutorial's sample, Brightpath was named in 12 of 15 answers (80%) while one question averaged 38%: a clear first target.
20. Watch Google's own numbers. Google counts AI Overview and AI Mode traffic in Search Console's Performance report under the Web search type, and offers a Generative AI performance report. Connect the Search Console integration to read it in plain English at no extra cost.

How to use AI tools for SEO without hurting quality
Use AI to research, draft and check, but keep a human on facts, first-hand experience and final edits. Google allows AI-assisted content but treats mass-produced pages without added value as spam.
Google's guidance says generative AI can be useful for researching a topic and adding structure, but generating many pages without adding value may violate its scaled content abuse policy. It also asks you to fact-check AI output, because generative models predict likely words rather than retrieve facts.
A safe division of labor for AI on-page SEO:
- AI does well: turning research into an outline, suggesting question headings, rewriting vague copy into specifics you supply, drafting FAQs and schema.
- You must do: supply the facts, add real examples and opinions, check every number, and decide what to publish.
- Tools help check: the Content Checker flags unprovable claims and readability; Article Comparison scores two drafts on 44 criteria.

AI readiness checklist: a one-minute version
If you only have a minute, check four things: AI search bots allowed, key pages indexed, an llms.txt file present, and organization structured data in place.
That is roughly what the AI Readiness Check tests in up to a minute: llms.txt, AI bot access and structured data, with fixes listed most important first. In the official tutorial's sample, the site passed 8 of 9 checks (89%), and the one remaining fix was adding llms-full.txt.
Note that “AI readiness checklist” also gets used for organizational readiness to adopt AI (data, governance, staff training), such as frameworks published for schools and enterprises. This page is about AI search readiness: whether AI assistants can find and cite your website. For the bigger picture of where this fits, start with what generative engine optimization is.
HOW IT WORKS
How to use this AI SEO checklist
- 1
Run the automated checks first
A Full Site Audit (1 to 3.5 minutes) and an AI Readiness Check (up to a minute) cover most of stages 1 and 2 in one pass.
- 2
Mark each item pass, fix or not relevant
Not every check applies to every site. A local plumber needs LocalBusiness schema; a SaaS docs site needs llms.txt more.
- 3
Fix in stage order
Access before foundation, foundation before content. Each stage depends on the one before.
- 4
Measure, then repeat monthly
Record your AI mention rate with the AI Mentions Tracker before and after, so you know which fixes moved anything.

What is an AI SEO checklist?
An AI SEO checklist is a list of checks that decide whether search engines and AI assistants can find, read, trust and cite your website. This one has 20 checks in four stages: access, foundation, content and measurement.
What is the difference between an SEO checklist and an AI SEO checklist?
A classic SEO checklist covers crawling, indexing, on-page and links for Google rankings. An AI SEO checklist keeps all that and adds AI crawler access by name, answer-first content, and measuring mentions in AI answers. See our on-page SEO checklist for the classic side.
How do I do AI SEO optimization?
Work through the stages in order: let AI search crawlers in, make sure key pages are indexed and fast, rewrite them to answer buyer questions directly with specifics and sources, then measure how often AI engines name you and repeat.
How often should I run the AI SEO checklist?
Run the automated checks monthly and after any redesign, migration or CDN change, since firewall and robots.txt changes are the most common causes of sudden AI invisibility. Re-measure AI mentions monthly.
Can I run these checks for free?
Most of them. Digimetrics is free for 7 days with no card, and the trial includes the AI Readiness Check, AI Mentions Tracker, llms.txt Generator, Schema Generator, Page Speed Check and AI Page Rewrite.
Does passing every check guarantee AI citations?
No. No tool can guarantee AI citations. Passing removes the blockers and makes your pages easier to quote; the engines still choose which sources to use.
